Gasoline prices in the US have been rising sharply over the past few months.
This year, travel numbers are still projected to be quite positive. However, rising gasoline prices and living costs over the past few months are forcing American citizens and households to adjust their summer travel plans.
According to the American Automobile Association, approximately 45 million Americans are expected to travel long distances during Memorial Day. However, nearly 90% of them are choosing to drive instead of buying plane tickets. In fact, airfares have increased by more than 20% since April compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the national average price of gasoline is above $4.50 per gallon, the highest in about four years. Overall, rising travel, accommodation, and food costs are forcing many American families to carefully consider their summer vacation plans.
According to forecasts from the US tourism industry, demand for summer travel remains high, but Americans are changing their spending habits. Instead of expensive trips and long weekend getaways, families are choosing closer destinations, optimizing travel costs, or simply enjoying relaxation at home.
Smart spending apps are also essential right now. As a survey by the gas price tracking app GasBuddy shows, 83% of drivers use the app to find the cheapest gas prices and are willing to drive an extra 2 to 3 miles to find cheaper options to save money on gas.
