Viet Duc Hospital (Hanoi) on the afternoon of June 13 said that doctors had just treated a 70-year-old male patient (in Thanh Hoa) who had lost almost all of his penis skin and his right testicle due to being bitten by a pig while feeding and delivering a sow.
Male patient admitted to hospital with external genital injuries caused by animal bites
Dr. Trinh Hoang Giang, Deputy Director of the Andrology Center, Viet Duc Hospital, said that immediately after receiving the patient, the doctors cleaned and treated the wound on the penis and scrotum. "The patient will have to undergo at least two more surgeries. In which, the patient will have to have surgery to cover the skin of the penis to the skin of the abdomen. After 3 months, the doctors will use the buried skin flaps to create new skin for the patient's penis," said Dr. Giang.
According to Dr. Giang, injuries to the external genitalia can be caused by many different reasons, including traffic accidents that directly traumatize the scrotum and perineum, causing extensive tissue loss. In addition, it can be caused by falling from a height or being kicked in the scrotum and penis during sports competitions, or by shrapnel from exploding artillery shells or mines.
In daily family life, penile-scrotal injuries can be caused by other people biting, cutting, or tearing off due to hatred in love, jealousy, etc. Some other people with mental problems such as depression cut off their own genitals.
In rural Vietnam, genital injuries are often caused by dog and pig bites. Dogs often bite the genitals of children and the elderly when they go to the toilet or when castrating pigs, often turning the pig's head upside down and clamping it between the thighs. The pig is in pain, struggles, and bites randomly, and bites the penis (the penis is often completely severed). Therefore, when in direct contact with livestock, labor protection must be worn.
"Wounds to the external genitalia not only affect the patient's reproductive function but also seriously affect the patient's psychology and sexual life. Therefore, if you are unfortunate enough to suffer from trauma - wounds to the scrotum and penis, you should immediately go to a specialized andrology facility for timely treatment" - Dr. Giang noted.
