On April 29, Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital informed that the male patient who swallowed dentures had successfully undergone surgery and is now in stable health.
Accordingly, on the evening of April 28, Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital received a 56-year-old male patient (residing in Tien Hung Ward, Dong Xoai City, Binh Phuoc Province) who was admitted to the emergency room in critical condition, with sore throat, continuous vomiting, drooling and chest pain.
Dentures removed from patient's esophagus
According to relatives, the patient was taking medication when he swallowed his dentures. Doctors determined that the patient had a foreign object stuck in his throat, so they ordered an emergency endoscopy under anesthesia to remove the object.
Doctor K'Lieu, who directly performed the endoscopy, said that the horizontal foreign object position is a very difficult position to operate, the upper 1/3 of the esophagus because it can easily cause complications and damage other parts of the esophagus.
Because the dentures have many prongs, they stick very tightly to the esophagus, making the endoscopy process more difficult than other common foreign objects. However, the endoscopy was successful after about 20 minutes, the foreign object removed was a denture measuring about 2 x 4cm.
After successfully removing the foreign object, the patient's condition was stable, there was no esophageal bleeding, no complications were detected and he was discharged from the hospital immediately afterwards.
The doctor performed endoscopic surgery to safely remove the dentures.
Hoan My Binh Phuoc Hospital warns that when swallowing dentures, the denture hook will usually get stuck in the narrow area of the esophagus near the chest, where there are many large blood vessels. The patient can die at any time if this iron hook punctures a large blood vessel, causing massive bleeding.
In addition, if the patient is hospitalized late, the iron hook can cause damage and infection in the mid-chest area, which can lead to death due to severe septic shock.
Therefore, if you accidentally swallow foreign objects, you should go to a medical facility immediately for timely support. You should not arbitrarily apply folk "tips" such as drinking water, swallowing rice or trying to stick your throat to let the foreign object go down, which will make treatment more difficult.
