This is considered a new step forward in protecting user data of technology companies.

According to 9to5Mac , next week Google will add iCloud to its data transfer support tool, allowing users to directly transfer their photo library to Apple's iCloud service without downloading it. The new tool, expected to be released next week, will automatically transfer photos from Google Photos to iCloud, with the option to transfer your entire library or individual albums as specified.

On the support page, Google also published a list of file types that users can transfer, including popular image and video formats, up to .webp format. Users should also note that the original photo files, after transferring to iCloud, will still be in Google Photos unless deleted.

According to Apple, the export process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete, depending on the amount of data. Additionally, the service will not work on child accounts, Managed Apple IDs, or iCloud accounts with Advanced Data Protection enabled.

The DTI initiative, which was launched in 2023, is the result of a collaboration between Apple, Google and Meta. Officially, the DTI is a continuation of the Open Data Transfer (DTP) project that began five years ago. It is also no coincidence that the tech giants announced the DTI just before the European Commission released its list of “gatekeepers” – technology companies that must comply with the Digital Markets Act.
