(To Quoc) - Markets in Hanoi today have been and are having obvious changes, in addition to traditional markets, there are also shopping malls and online markets. Each type of market has its own characteristics but it cannot be denied that this is also a competition with traditional markets.
Many changes over time
Hanoi is one of the places with rapid urbanization, so the market has also changed a lot over time to meet the development needs of the population. If in the past, many markets were small and simple, then later they were renovated, rebuilt, more spacious and beautiful like Dong Xuan market. Even the previous market area has become bustling commercial centers like Cua Nam market. Mo market, Hang Da market combines both a commercial center above and a traditional market underground...
Another change that cannot be ignored is the market in Hanoi. If in the suburban districts of Hanoi, the market form is still maintained and exists without much difference compared to before, then in the inner city, the market has changed. Most of the markets in the inner city are now open every day instead of having to wait for the session like before. On the old session days, there will be some "special" items that are not available on normal days. For example, before, Buoi market had six sessions a month on the fourth and ninth days, but now on these sessions there is a separate area for people to buy and sell plants and animals. On normal days, this market is still open with items serving life.
Or like Mo market, in the past it was held in sessions on the 2nd, 7th, 12th, 17th, 22nd, 27th of the lunar month, but now the market is held regularly every day.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, online shopping has become popular and convenient, changing the way many people in Hanoi go to the market. Until the pandemic was controlled, the habit of online shopping became more and more popular, even overwhelming direct shopping. This led to the activities of traditional markets being more or less affected and changing. Many sellers in the market had to quickly catch up with the trend when they had to sell both in the traditional way and online. However, not everyone caught up with the trend of online shopping, so they were quite disappointed when the number of customers decreased significantly. The concepts of "online market", "online shopping", "shopping on the floor" are becoming more and more popular and have quite a lot of competition with traditional markets.
The quiet but flourishing competition of online stalls has had a clear impact on traditional markets. The image of bustling, crowded markets like before has decreased significantly. Some markets and stalls are less crowded, reflecting the difficulty of business, but sometimes it is not necessarily so. Because if the items are traded online, buyers do not need to go directly to the market to buy everything they need.
Habits are differentiated by age
It can be seen that changes in urbanization, population growth, information technology and social network development have had a clear impact on market activities in Hanoi. People have therefore also changed their habits. For the elderly, the previous generation is attached to traditional markets because they still maintain the habit of going to the market as a cultural feature. But this number is decreasing.
As for middle-aged people, they have been catching up with the trend of combining online and traditional shopping.
Unlike the two generations mentioned above, young people seem to choose online shopping more than traditional shopping at the market.
Tram (a student in Hai Ba Trung district) said that she is quite busy with studying, working part-time, and traveling, so she prioritizes online shopping because it is fast and she can compare prices, so she can often buy goods with good prices and quality. She is afraid of going to traditional markets and being overcharged because she does not know how to bargain, and if the price is too low, she is embarrassed. She also thinks that memories of markets like previous generations are not too important, as long as her life is still good.
Will the above changes in shopping habits cause the beautiful cultural features of the market to fade away? Ms. Hoa (70 years old in Dong Da) shared: I have a lot of time so I still go to the market every day. It's not because I now have a refrigerator to store food for many days that I go to the market less. Until now, I go to the market because it's a habit. Going to the market, I have a lot of emotions, receive a lot of information. Hot information about the neighborhood and society is also updated, commented quite lively at the market. Besides, I can also bargain and visit acquaintances when I get to the market.
Thus, it can be seen that in life, whether in ancient times or today, although the market has changed, in addition to the need to buy and sell goods, the market is still a place that contains many beautiful cultural features. It is also an emotional need, a need of the spiritual life of each person.
