Currently, some highland communes and wards of Ha Long City, such as Le Loi, Son Duong, Hoanh Bo, etc., are considered the largest flower granaries of Quang Ninh. With favorable climate and soil, this place has become a suitable land for gladiolus to bloom brilliantly in all seasons. Gladiolus is gradually becoming a prominent agricultural brand of these localities.
Coming from An Bien 1 village, Le Loi commune, Ms. Le Thi Van started growing orchids in 1996. The process of working helped her realize that flower breeding not only requires dedication but also requires high knowledge and techniques. With a spirit of learning and a desire to develop agriculture, she continuously stepped out of her comfort zone, personally going to the South to learn about flower growing models.
During the period 2003-2008, she decided to go to Da Lat to find gladiolus bulbs and brought them back to Hoanh Bo to try planting them, starting her journey to conquer the "queen" of gladiolus on a new land. In the early days, due to lack of experience and understanding of the terrain, the gladiolus plants did not achieve high yields. But with perseverance, she gradually improved her techniques, choosing sandy soil for the best growth of the variety.
From small plots of land, Ms. Van gradually expanded the scale of production. Up to now, Van Sinh High Quality Flower Cooperative has nearly 4 hectares of land specializing in gladiolus cultivation, providing high quality varieties to farmers.
According to Ms. Van, for the gladiolus to grow healthily, the rented field needs to ensure that the sandy soil is the most suitable. With many years of experience, Ms. Van and the members of the cooperative have built a methodical planting process. Gladiolus are sown in July and August (lunar calendar). The time from planting to harvest is about 6 months. To improve the soil, the flowers are usually grown once, then intercropped with other crops, before returning to do a new flower crop.
"The hardest part is the sowing stage, which requires ensuring a 5cm distance, monitoring for cutworms, and maintaining humidity with a 10-15 day cycle of watering the field. The extraction and storage process in cold storage is also very important to achieve the highest quality," Ms. Van shared.
Her passion drives Ms. Van to constantly explore, learn, and research gladiolus varieties both domestically and internationally, grasp market information, and expand relationships with traders and customers. Her flower garden always finds a stable source of consumption in the market. Currently, her flower garden yields 100,000-150,000 bulbs each year. The cooperative also imports about 500,000 bulbs per year to supply to people in and outside the province.
With thorough investment and application of science and technology, Ms. Van's gladiolus are always sturdy, fresh, meeting customer tastes, with an average selling price of 2,000-3,000 VND/bulb, bringing in revenue of more than 1 billion VND/year. Currently, the cooperative is creating regular jobs for 10-15 workers with a stable income of 300,000 VND/day.
With her passion and creativity, Ms. Le Thi Van is contributing to changing the face of agriculture, bringing high-quality gladiolus bulbs and opening up new directions for farmers. She hopes to replicate the model, continue to cooperate with Dutch experts to improve varieties and export the Ha Long gladiolus brand to other countries.
