In just the past two days, many major newspapers in France have simultaneously published negative articles, not only recalling the conflict-filled period between Messi and PSG, but also accusing him of becoming a "dirty" player after joining American football.
First is the front page article of L'Equipe on June 27 with the title "Messi, not everything has been forgiven".
The article stressed that, despite leaving PSG for almost a year, Messi has not been completely forgiven by the French fans and media. L'Equipe described Messi's two seasons in Paris as a "cold marriage", where the relationship between him and the audience was broken by a series of incidents.
Many of Messi's unforgettable incidents were listed, such as the times he was booed at home, the incident of going to Saudi Arabia without permission leading to an internal suspension (but this is just a rumor), and it was said that those actions "hurt the pride of Parisians".
The series of attacks does not stop at the past. Most recently, L'Equipe published another article with a controversial title: "Controversy, cards, trouble: call him the dirty Messi".
The article describes a completely different Messi at Inter Miami – hot-tempered, often committing tactical fouls, arguing with referees and ready to get booked for being too protective of teammates.
The newspaper cited the recent FIFA Club World Cup match between Inter Miami and Palmeiras, when Messi raised his finger in protest at referee Szymon Marciniak and received a yellow card.
In addition, in MLS, Messi was also recorded reacting harshly to the opposing coaching staff and having uncontrolled behavior right on the field.
According to L'Equipe, this is "a completely different face of Messi" compared to the gentle, patient image that fans used to know at Barca.
The newspaper asserts that Messi is now a tough player who does not hesitate to use tricks to gain an advantage, but that also means he has lost some of his nobility in competition.
Nicknamed "Dirty Messi" is considered a heavily offensive act, especially in the context that French public opinion has never truly reconciled with the Argentine superstar.
On social media, many international fans have refuted this public opinion, claiming that the French media is "playing tricks to discredit" Messi at the exact moment he faces his old team.
Many fans believe that the way French newspapers use phrases like “Messi plays dirty” or “Messi has not been forgiven” is an expression of bitterness over defeat. Specifically, the French people hate Messi after Argentina defeated France in the 2022 World Cup final.
The match between Inter Miami and PSG in the round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will take place at 11pm tonight, June 29.
