From March 2021 to present, he has been assigned to be Party Secretary and Director of Dong Da General Hospital.
Dong Da General Hospital is the hospital assigned by Hanoi City and Hanoi Department of Health to carry out line management activities, infectious disease specialist activities, including management, care and treatment for HIV/AIDS patients.
Many people are hesitant to talk about HIV/AIDS, but no matter what position he holds, Dr. Pham Ba Hien is not afraid of difficulties, but is always dedicated to his work, especially with patients with the disease of the century.
In the work of HIV/AIDS prevention and control, Dr. Pham Ba Hien directly treats HIV/AIDS patients, consults on difficult cases, and provides professional support to other HIV/AIDS outpatient clinics in the city according to plan and when requested.
Participate in consulting, propaganda, and dissemination of knowledge on HIV/AIDS prevention in many forms, both directly and indirectly. Not only that, he also has scientific research topics at the city and grassroots levels that have been accepted in this field.
“HIV/AIDS patients are the ones who need to be shared the most. Most of them are in difficult and sensitive circumstances, and because of fear of being discriminated against, they isolate themselves and avoid others. This also makes it difficult for many patients to access treatment, making their condition worse, which makes HIV/AIDS prevention difficult,” said Dr. Hien.
According to Dr. Nguyen Ba Hien, he himself has been discriminated against and stigmatized in the past because he is a doctor specializing in treating HIV patients.
About 20 years ago, when knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS in the community was limited, even medical staff were afraid to come into contact with them for fear of contracting the disease.
During his work, Dr. Hien has faced the risk of infection many times. He recalls the time he treated an HIV/AIDS patient who committed suicide by cutting his wrists.
While treating the wound, he was splashed with the patient's blood on his arm, but facing the patient's life-threatening situation, all he could think about was how to save the patient's life.
Doctor Hien shared that if you have a firm grasp of knowledge, implement good infection control and strict infection prevention procedures, you will no longer feel worried when performing procedures and surgeries for HIV/AIDS patients.
The process of medical examination, care and treatment for HIV/AIDS patients is not much different from that of normal patients.
All cases of examination and treatment, especially surgery involving contact with blood and body fluids, must ensure professional procedures. The procedures must meet the requirements of patient safety, medical staff safety and community safety.
Not only must we prevent HIV infection, but we must also prevent hepatitis B, hepatitis C and many other infectious diseases.
Dr. Hien expressed that eliminating prejudice and discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS will help us move towards the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic faster, because this will not only help doctors and nurses become stronger in their work of saving lives, but also make HIV/AIDS patients feel more secure when accessing early testing and treatment.
Many people after being infected with HIV become active propagandists, supporting HIV/AIDS prevention work.
With his active contributions and dedication in nearly 25 years of work, Dr. Pham Ba Hien has been awarded many noble awards. Among them, he was awarded the title of Meritorious Physician by the President.
In 2021, the Vietnam Health Trade Union awarded the Certificate of Merit "For outstanding achievements in the prevention of Covid-19 epidemic in 2021" and the title of Excellent Capital Citizen in 2022.
