DTO - Seeing the people of Dinh Yen mat weaving village (Lai Vung commune) having to work hard to weave mats by hand, which is time-consuming and has low productivity, Mr. Phan Van Tuan Anh (born in 1988), residing in Lai Vung commune, was determined to research and create a mat weaving machine suitable for the craft village.
Thanks to the mat weaving machine made by Mr. Phan Van Tuan Anh, mat weavers in Dinh Yen Mat Village (Lai Vung Commune) save a lot of production time.
Born into a family with a traditional mat weaving profession, Phan Van Tuan Anh was familiar with sedge fibers, weaving threads and the sound of looms since childhood. Due to his family's difficult circumstances, Tuan Anh chose to study electrical engineering in Can Tho City. In 2005, Tuan Anh returned to his hometown to follow his parents' career in mat weaving.
Tuan Anh said that in the past, his family mainly produced mats by hand. Then, his family bought a mat weaving machine, but the production could not meet market demand. During each holiday or Tet, the amount of mats that had to be produced was large, and the weaving machine was operating at capacity, so it often broke down. Every time it broke down, Tuan Anh researched and repaired it himself to keep the machine working. Gradually, he got used to it, and the profession taught him a profession, so when the machines in his family and those around him broke down, Tuan Anh knew how to fix them, without depending on outside mechanics.
However, when put into use, the mat weaving machine could not maximize its capacity and was not suitable for local production conditions. From there, Tuan Anh began to think and improve some features and positions on the machine to achieve maximum capacity and suit practical needs.
At first, repairing the machine was difficult, but through visits, learning from experience, carefully observing the work of professional workers and directly discussing unclear issues, he was confident in creating his own machine.
After the process of implementation and improvement, the first mat weaving machine was completed, serving the production needs of the family. Gradually, Tuan Anh created many machines to help the villagers of the mat weaving village have better access to machinery, improving productivity. With those superior features, people trusted and placed more orders.
However, the mat products produced were not as beautiful as expected. After many improvements, the mat weaving machine gradually met about 95% of the user's needs. To date, Mr. Phan Van Tuan Anh has invented more than 1,000 mat weaving machines to serve the production needs of mat weavers in and outside the province.
Mr. Phan Van Tuan Anh said: “The successful creation of this machine has helped increase productivity 5 times compared to the old method, helping the product increase its competitive advantage. At the same time, I also successfully invented a mat weaving machine that prints patterns on the product, in order to better serve market demand.”
Up to now, Mr. Phan Van Tuan Anh’s production facility has created jobs for many local workers. Not only simply following in their parents’ footsteps, young people like Mr. Tuan Anh have also “breathed new life” into the mat weaving profession by researching, learning and improving designs and patterns to better suit modern tastes and applying technology to some production stages to increase productivity...
