Students spend millions of dong on coffee every week.
As a freelancer, Ta Nhat Trinh (30 years old, residing in Tan Hung Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) frequently chooses coffee shops as her familiar workspace. Due to the nature of her freelance work and the crowded environment at home, Trinh finds that working at a coffee shop helps her concentrate better.
Trinh visits the cafe about 3-4 times a week, spending around 50,000 VND per drink each time, totaling nearly 200,000 VND per week. Additionally, when meeting friends or business partners, her spending increases to 500,000-800,000 VND per week. According to Trinh, this is a reasonable amount because the cafe offers Wi-Fi and a suitable space for working for extended periods.
"Even at home, there are sometimes expenses for food and electricity... so going to a coffee shop is more convenient and not too expensive," Trinh said.

Even though they are still students, many of them are willing to spend a significant portion of their living expenses at cafes to study.
Phan Thanh Nam, a student at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, said he usually goes to a cafe to study about 5 times a week. Each time, Nam spends about 50,000 VND on a drink, equivalent to about 250,000 - 400,000 VND per week, including other fees such as parking, surcharges, and snacks. According to Nam, this expense is completely worthwhile if it helps him study more effectively.
"At home, I can't concentrate due to distractions, but studying at a cafe is more effective because I have friends to study with, the space is comfortable, so the money spent is worth it. If I only went to chat and hang out with friends and spent that much every week, it would be a bit excessive," Nam shared.
Pham Thi Bach Cuc, a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said she goes to cafes almost six days a week to study or meet friends. Cuc spends between 500,000 and 1 million VND per week on drinks and snacks if she invites friends, or extra fees for staying longer during exam season.
According to Cúc, the trend of young people today choosing cafes to study and work is quite common due to their convenience. They are willing to spend more for a more "chill" and beautiful space compared to sitting at home or at school. "Cafes have air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and some places where you can sit for a long time just for a drink costing a few tens of thousands of VND, so it's very convenient for everyone. This expense is worthwhile," Cúc shared.

Sitting in a coffee shop has become an essential need.
Nguyen Mai Han (26 years old, residing in Tan Thuan Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that she regularly goes to coffee shops about 4 times a week, especially when she feels bored or has difficulty concentrating on work at home. Han usually chooses different cafes instead of sticking to one place and can sit there for 5-6 hours to finish her work.
"Each time, a drink costs around 50,000 VND, so each week I spend between 200,000 and 400,000 VND, plus food, extra fees, parking... going to cafes is almost indispensable," Hân said. According to Hân, the weekly cost isn't too much, but it's reasonable and necessary in her life.
Meanwhile, Tran Thanh Lieu, a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said she usually spends around 45,000 to under 50,000 VND per drink at a coffee shop, going about 3-4 times a week, especially more often (5-6 times a week) during exam season. "I don't spend much money, but in return I have a better space to study more effectively, so this is the cost of buying efficiency, which is very necessary," Lieu said.

According to Nga, spending money on sitting in a cafe is necessary for enjoyment.

For Nguyen Thi Nga (31 years old, a freelance content writer residing in An Hoi Dong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), coffee shops are like her "second home." Three to four times a week, Nga brings her laptop to a coffee shop to study foreign languages online, relax, or meet deadlines, spending approximately 45,000-60,000 VND per item on food and drinks each time. "If I meet up with friends that week, my spending can reach over 500,000 VND per week," Nga said. According to Nga, most coffee shops have beautiful decor, open spaces, and amenities that create a comfortable feeling. "Moreover, I can take photos, relax, and easily meet friends, so I spend money on this to enjoy myself," Nga added.
