The risk of African swine fever outbreak is very high

Việt NamViệt Nam09/09/2024

The closed pig farming model, with walls and partitions... helps manage and minimize the spread of pathogens from the outside.

In particular, through sampling to monitor the circulation of DTHCP virus in the environment (markets, slaughterhouses, livestock households...), 4/40 samples were found to be positive for DTHCP virus... in the coming time, the possibility of DTHCP disease outbreak is very high.

Due to the characteristics of the DTHCP virus, which can survive for a long time in the environment, the transmission route is very complicated; combined with the small-scale farming conditions of the people in the province, which do not ensure biosafety conditions..., there is a risk of the disease arising and spreading. Although the agricultural sector has currently implemented DTHCP vaccination, the current success rate is still very low, about 08% (equivalent to 11,684 pigs/total herd of 146,110 pigs to be vaccinated), so it has not yet ensured sufficient coverage of DTHCP vaccination according to regulations (from 80% or more).

On August 1, 2024, Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee issued Official Dispatch No. 3809/UBND-NN on urging the implementation of measures to prevent and control ASF according to Directive No. 21/CT-TTg, dated July 14, 2024 of the Prime Minister.

Through discussion, comrade Tran Quoc Viet, Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra Vinh) said: the reason for the low rate of DTHCP vaccination is that currently, the vaccine is only applied to pigs for meat, the cost of the vaccine is still high and it is implemented in the direction of socialization (farmers pay 100% of the cost of the vaccine and injection labor). Meanwhile, pig farmers want to protect their breeding and reserve pigs; for pigs for meat, due to the short herd restoration cycle (about 3.5 - 04 months to sell), people are not bold in implementing DTHCP vaccination...

Mr. Tran Van Duc, La Bang hamlet, Long Son commune, Tra Cu district said: currently his family raises 600 breeding sows, on average producing about 5,000 breeding pigs/batch. In addition to fully vaccinating breeding sows with all types of vaccines; but for DTHCL vaccine, it has not yet been deployed on breeding pigs. For large-scale pig farms and households, protection on gilts is very important, because breeding pigs often have a fairly long breeding cycle (with stages from selecting gilts to breeding pigs, mating, and pregnancy).

Meanwhile, when DTHCP occurs, it causes almost 100% damage to farmers. Currently, DTHCP vaccine is only limited to injections on pigs. This affects the ability to protect the herd from the virus pathogens right from the early stages of bringing the breed to market...

Many localities are facing difficulties in implementing DTHCP vaccination, so the success rate is very low; along with that, the weather is entering the rainy season, so the DTHCP virus pathogens in the environment are very easy to spread. Meanwhile, the DTHCP vaccination rate in localities is still low; typically, Tieu Can district only reaches 0.5% of the total herd that needs to be vaccinated; Cau Ke district reaches 16% of the total herd that needs to be vaccinated (equivalent to 5,513 pigs)...

Ms. Ha My Xuyen, in charge of the Cau Ke District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station, said: Currently, the work of injecting DTHCP vaccine is very difficult, due to the implementation of socialization and the high price of vaccines. Therefore, from now until the end of the year, the district will continue to mobilize households to vaccinate when re-herding; plan to ensure adequate and timely vaccine sources at the station to supply when people register for DTHCP vaccination... to ensure the work of preventing and controlling DTHCP disease is effective, not causing an outbreak and spreading into an epidemic in the near future.

According to comrade Tran Quoc Viet, focus on propagating and mobilizing the good implementation of Directive No. 21/CT-TTg dated July 14, 2024 of the Prime Minister on strictly implementing measures to prevent and control ASF; Official Dispatch No. 3809/UBND-NN... Implement animal husbandry in the direction of biosafety and disease safety for each subject (households raising, transporting, slaughtering...); farmers regularly check the health of the pig herd and promptly report to veterinary staff and local authorities when there are unusual symptoms in the pig herd.

Regularly organize sampling to monitor the circulation of viruses in the environment; carry out disinfection and sterilization of livestock farms, trading and slaughtering points, including the second phase of disinfection and sterilization launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (from September to October 2024). Mobilize and propagate pig farmers to vaccinate their pigs against ASF in the vaccination area...
