At noon on September 1st, Power Transmission Company 4 - Vietnam National Power Transmission Corporation determined that the cause of the fire at the 220kV Cai Lay Substation (Tien Giang province) last night was a lightning strike.

Specifically, at 9:30 PM on August 31st, a transformer malfunction occurred at the Cai Lay 220kV Substation (belonging to Power Transmission Company 4 - National Power Transmission Corporation).

Immediately afterwards, Power Transmission Company 4 disconnected the transformer from the system to ensure the safe operation of the national power transmission system.

The company also notified the fire department in Cai Lay town to coordinate firefighting efforts, cordon off safe areas to hand over to the local fire department, and restore systems unaffected by the incident.

At that time, preliminary information indicated that lightning struck the top of a 22kV underground cable pole outside the substation, then spread to the Cai Lay Substation, causing a malfunction in the 110kV transformer at the Cai Lay Substation. Simultaneously, the area was experiencing heavy rain and thunderstorms.

To date, the incident has not caused any casualties. Therefore, EVNNPT stated that it is coordinating with the Southern Power System Dispatch Center and the Southern Power Corporation to restore power supply to the area. At the same time, EVNNPT has mobilized backup transformers to replace the damaged ones as soon as possible to ensure the safety of the power system.

The Cai Lay 220kV Substation, located in Cai Lay town, Tien Giang province, was put into operation in 1997. The substation has two 220kV transformers (AT1 and AT2) with a total capacity of 375MVA; and two 110kV transformers (T3 and T4) with a total capacity of 80MVA.

The transformer substation fire caused widespread power outages, affecting the Cai Lay town area and the 110kV 174 Cai Lay - 171 Tan Thanh power line, as well as the 110kV Thanh Hoa, Moc Hoa, and Vinh Hung substations; resulting in sudden power outages in districts across Long An province.

Earlier, at 9:30 PM on August 31st, a fire broke out at the Cai Lay 220kV substation, located in Ward 5, Zone 1.

Immediately afterwards, 34 officers and soldiers along with 6 fire trucks arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire. The fire covered an area of approximately 100 square meters out of the total 33,000 square meters of the substation.

After more than an hour of firefighting, the blaze was brought under control.

The fire caused no casualties; however, it destroyed two transformers. The value of the damaged property is currently being determined by the authorities.
