After Dinh Thi Huong's kumite bronze medal in the women's 68 kg weight class, the Vietnamese karate team with golden girls Nguyen Thi Ngoan (kumite, women's 61 kg weight class) and female teammates Nguyen Thi Phuong, Luu Thi Thu Uyen and Nguyen Ngoc Tram (kata - performance) continued to compete this afternoon (October 6) with the hope of helping the Vietnamese sports delegation win more medals.
In the round of 16 of the women's 61 kg weight class, boxer Nguyen Thi Ngoan defeated boxer Jesus Marta do Carmo (Macau) with a score of 5-1, including an extremely high-quality ippon to close the match.
In the quarterfinals, Nguyen Thi Ngoan met an equally matched opponent, Atousa Golshanezhad (Iran). Although Atousa took the lead twice with precise yuko shots, Nguyen Thi Ngoan was still very brave and in control of the situation. The Vietnamese boxer defended well, before taking advantage of her opponent's weakness to level the score. After the two boxers tied, Nguyen Thi Ngoan won the ticket to the next round thanks to the votes of the assistant judges (3 referees chose Ngoan, only 1 referee chose the Iranian boxer).
Entering the semi-finals, Nguyen Thi Ngoan faced a very strong opponent, Assel Kanay of Kazakhstan. However, with an excited mentality, Nguyen Thi Ngoan dominated the match. She scored a 1-0 lead thanks to a punch to her opponent's face, but after complaining to the referee, Assel also won 1 point thanks to a successful punch.
Nguyen Thi Ngoan then attacked continuously to score ippon, leading her opponent 5-1. Although Assel played hard in the remaining 1 minute when she scored to reduce the score to 3-5, Nguyen Thi Ngoan was still very persistent in protecting the lead. She had a precise attack in the last 20 seconds, at the same time cleverly dodging the attack to defeat her opponent with a score of 7-5, winning the right to play in the final.
In the final, Nguyen Thi Ngoan's opponent was martial artist Gong Li (China).
