On December 24, the People's Court of Dak Lak province opened the first instance trial of defendant Nguyen Thi Huyen, born in 1984, former treasurer of Dak Lak Provincial Political School, for the act of "embezzlement of property".
Defendant Nguyen Thi Huyen at trial.According to the case, on March 19, 2018, Dak Lak Provincial Political School reported to the police that there were signs of breaking into the window, breaking into the treasury room, opening the safe and stealing more than 500 million VND. After initiating the case of property theft, on March 29, 2019, the investigation was suspended due to the expiration of the time limit without identifying the perpetrator.
Through reviewing documents provided by Ms. Huyen, the authorities determined that the total amount of money advanced by individuals at Dak Lak Provincial Political School from April 2017 to March 2018 was more than 285 million VND. The entire amount of advance payment was not updated in the cash book of the cashier and accountant.
After the break-in, individuals refunded more than 210 million VND, but Ms. Huyen only deposited more than 124 million VND in the fund. Ms. Huyen kept more than 86 million VND without permission, did not deposit it in the fund, did not record it, and used it for personal purposes.
On September 7, 2021, when handing over the work to the new treasurer, Ms. Huyen also did not mention the amount of more than 86 million VND. The police agency determined that during her time as treasurer of Dak Lak Provincial Political School, Ms. Huyen had embezzled more than 86 million VND.
After reviewing the records, documents, evidence as well as the questioning process at the trial, the Trial Panel of the People's Court of Dak Lak province sentenced defendant Nguyen Thi Huyen to 3 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of "Embezzlement of property".
Regarding the case, the authorities also requested to review and handle the responsibility for the management and supervision work of the leaders and accountants of Dak Lak Provincial Political School from August 2016 to April 2020.
