According to Japanese news agency Kyodo News, on June 26, some White House officials mentioned the possibility that US President Donald Trump will extend the 90-day reciprocal tax suspension for trading partners.
With just days left before the 90-day tariff deadline expires in early July, trade deals reached by Washington with its partners are still rare, even with top partners.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reassured at a press briefing on June 26: "That deadline is not important. The United States is having very good and productive discussions with many key trading partners.
Simply put, the president can offer those countries a deal if they refuse to propose a deal by the deadline. The president can then choose the reciprocal tariffs that he thinks are in the United States' best interests."
Ms Leavitt also affirmed that the tariff order "can be extended and that decision is in the hands of the president".
Previously, on June 11, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also confirmed that the White House could extend the tax moratorium for partners deemed to be "of good will".
Ms. Leavitt's remarks came as a Japanese negotiating delegation arrived in Washington for the seventh round of talks with the United States.
Previously, the US and Japan failed to reach a trade agreement when Mr. Trump met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada last week.
At that time, the two leaders agreed to continue ministerial-level negotiations to find common ground. A few hours later, when sharing about the negotiation process with Tokyo, Mr. Trump only commented that the Japanese were not "easy to deal with."
Although Japan is one of the leading economies and the most important trading partner of the United States, Tokyo has not been able to reach an early agreement with the United States.
In fact, so far the trade agreements announced are still very few, reflecting the difficulty and the firmness of the White House.
