According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Van Thanh canal is one of the important drainage and water storage canals of Thanh My Tay ward as well as Ho Chi Minh City. This is one of two major branches of the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal basin (along with Xuyen Tam canal).
In recent times, Van Thanh canal has been encroached upon, silted up, and seriously polluted, greatly affecting the landscape, drainage capacity, and people's health. Therefore, investment in dredging, environmental improvement, and infrastructure construction of Van Thanh canal is very necessary.
Ho Chi Minh City People's Council has passed a resolution deciding on the investment policy for the Project of Dredging, improving the environment, and building infrastructure of Van Thanh canal.
The project aims to beautify the urban area, improve the environment, prevent encroachment on canal banks that cause water resource degradation, and improve the landscape environment of residential areas along both sides of the canal. In addition, the project will also enhance the capacity of water storage, drainage, and flood prevention for residential areas and public works in the basin.
Regarding the scale of investment, the project will renovate the entire main canal of nearly 2 km long (from Vo Oanh Street to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal) and a 275m long branch canal. In particular, it will build a bank protection embankment with prestressed concrete piles along both sides of the main Van Thanh canal and Branch 1 canal; and dredge Van Thanh canal and Branch 1 canal.
In addition, the project will build roads along the canal; build a new 17m wide Phu An bridge and expand and upgrade Ngo Tat To street; build a parallel road connecting to Dien Bien Phu street; build a vertical sewer system for domestic drainage; build parks/green areas, technical infrastructure along the canal, etc.
The project has a total investment of more than 8,555 billion VND from the city budget. The implementation period is from 2025-2030, construction from 2027 to 2029.

Specifically, Component Project 1: Dredging, environmental improvement, infrastructure construction of Van Thanh canal, total estimated investment of about 1,743 billion VND.
Component project 2: Compensation, support, resettlement and site clearance. Project to dredge, improve the environment, and build infrastructure for Van Thanh canal with a total estimated investment of about 6,812 billion VND.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Council assigned the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to implement, manage and operate the project in accordance with the Resolution and legal regulations; urge and inspect the investor; take responsibility for progress, quality, economical and effective use of capital, and prevent corruption and negativity.
