Despite many difficulties, the family of Ms. Tran Thi Que, in Gia Sinh commune (Gia Vien district) was peaceful and happy, the couple worked hard to cultivate 3 hectares of rice fields to raise their children. But then an incident happened, nearly a year ago, Ms. Que's husband died of a stroke, and she herself had just undergone brain surgery. Ms. Que's family's economy became unstable, when the only source of income came from collecting waste in her residential area.
Her face is haggard from hard work, but the woman still exudes an optimistic spirit. Ms. Que shared: “I have 3 children, the eldest grandson is studying automotive engineering and is about to graduate; the second granddaughter is a first-year student at Thai Nguyen University of Education and the youngest daughter, Ngo Hong Hanh, will be in 5th grade next year. Helping their mother, the older grandchildren both study and work part-time. My joy is the understanding of my children, even though the road ahead for the four of us is still full of obstacles,” Ms. Que said.
To further motivate Ngo Hong Hanh, the youngest daughter of Ms. Que, the Gia Vien District Education Promotion Association recently awarded her the “Going to School with Me” scholarship. The scholarship of 4.5 million VND carries much hope for the little student in the upcoming school year.
“I use some of the money to buy books and clothes, and save the rest to buy more school supplies when needed. I will try to study well, follow the example of my siblings and be worthy of my mother’s hard work and the trust of the benefactors,” Hong Hanh calculated.
Ngo Hong Hanh is one of 100 disadvantaged students in Gia Vien district who were awarded the “Overcoming Difficulties to Go to School” scholarship by the district’s Association for Promotion of Education with a total amount of 450 million VND. The funding source is taken from the district’s Gratitude and Social Security Fund and from socialized sources.
