Tottenham Hotspur sent an ambitious signal at the beginning of the season when they "tied down" Cristian Romero with a new contract until 2029, at the same time making the Argentine center-back - who won the 2022 World Cup - the club's highest-paid player.
Amid speculation that Romero could leave amid intense interest from Atletico Madrid, Tottenham not only successfully retained the defensive stalwart but also handed him the permanent captaincy following the departure of Son Heung-min. This is considered the most important contract since Son signed a new contract in 2021, and a strong affirmation of Spurs' ambitions under coach Thomas Frank.
Romero has repeatedly expressed his doubts about the way the club is run. In June, he even sent a secret farewell message to Ange Postecoglou. However, after only a few weeks working with coach Thomas Frank, the Argentine captain changed his attitude, decided to stay long-term and refused the temptation to leave London. Tottenham also showed their firmness when valuing Romero at over 60 million pounds and firmly refused to sell.
As well as keeping Romero, Tottenham are working to complete the remaining pieces of the puzzle for their title ambitions. After bringing in Mohammed Kudus and João Palhinha, Spurs are closing in on the signing of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace for an expected fee of under £60m. The North London side are also said to have contacted Man City to loan young talent Savinho before the transfer window closed.
Notably, during the opening win over Burnley, Chairman Daniel Levy sat next to Vivienne Lewis – daughter of former owner Joe Lewis, now a senior executive at the Tavistock Group and a member of the Lewis Family Foundation, the largest shareholder of the Enic Group. This appearance further reinforced the belief that Tottenham are strongly financially backed to realise the statement of “Premier League and Champions League ambitions”.
After a summer of doubt, Tottenham have turned things around with the historic signing of Romero. This is not only a strategic move in terms of personnel, but also a message to the rest of the league: Spurs are serious about this year's race.
