Identifying and refuting wrong views on Ho Chi Minh's ideology

At the 12th Congress, our Party affirmed: “President Ho Chi Minh 's thought, together with Marxism-Leninism, is the ideological foundation and compass for the actions of the Party and the Vietnamese revolution, an extremely great and valuable spiritual asset of our Party and people, forever illuminating the revolutionary cause of our Party and people”. Inheriting and promoting that spirit, the document of the 13th National Party Congress determined: “Firmly and creatively apply Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh thought; firmly adhere to the goal of national independence and socialism; firmly adhere to the Party's renewal policy; firmly adhere to the principles of Party building to firmly build and defend the socialist Fatherland of Vietnam”.

However, recently, hostile and destructive forces have intensified their plot of “ peaceful evolution” to sabotage the Party, the State and our country’s revolution with increasing frequency, increasing intensity, and increasingly sophisticated and complex manifestations, causing negative impacts and unpredictable consequences, harming the process of national construction and development. Among them are propaganda activities denying Ho Chi Minh’s thought. Therefore, protecting the Party’s ideological foundation, including Ho Chi Minh’s thought, is one of the important contents, deciding the survival of the Party and our regime.

* Wrong views of hostile forces on Ho Chi Minh's ideology

Hostile forces focused on attacking Ho Chi Minh's ideology with two different extremes: One is to downplay Ho Chi Minh's ideology, claiming that Ho Chi Minh only repeated the ideology of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin and other great thinkers, but did not have his own ideology or that the ideology did not become a system. Two is to exalt Ho Chi Minh's ideology, contrast Ho Chi Minh's ideology with Marxism-Leninism, claiming that Ho Chi Minh was a nationalist, not a communist. Both of these views are wrong, because Ho Chi Minh's ideology is a creative application of Marxism-Leninism to the historical conditions of Vietnam. He skillfully combined Marxism-Leninism with traditional national ideology and the quintessence of human values. Marxism-Leninism in Ho Chi Minh is not empty, dogmatic arguments but has transformed into a system of worldview, methodology, and scientific , practical philosophy of life, directly leading the success of the Vietnamese revolution.

Hostile forces have put forward false arguments such as: Ho Chi Minh was just a blind follower of Marxism-Leninism, without any lofty thoughts; importing Marxism-Leninism with the theory of class struggle, causing decades of “bloodbath” was a mistake; the idea that “nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” is inhumane. They put on the internet many distorted arguments about the so-called “harmful effects of Ho Chi Minh’s ideology”.

They also distorted that President Ho Chi Minh chose the path of socialism while not understanding what socialism is. Ho Chi Minh's theory of socialism is "so simple that people ask whether it is Marxist socialism or not? And that "it is impossible to use this utopian primitive socialism to successfully confront developed capitalism" or "Ho Chi Minh is essentially just a nationalist, using Marxism-Leninism as a means"...

With their fragmented and incorrect arguments, they attempt to separate Ho Chi Minh's ideology from Marxism-Leninism; they argue that Marxism-Leninism is now outdated and only Ho Chi Minh's ideology is valuable, by explaining that the content of Ho Chi Minh's ideology is essentially nationalism.

* Defending Ho Chi Minh's ideology, refuting erroneous and hostile views

“Ho Chi Minh Thought is a comprehensive and profound system of viewpoints on fundamental issues of the Vietnamese revolution, the result of the creative application and development of Marxism-Leninism to the specific conditions of our country, inheriting and developing the fine traditional values of the nation, absorbing human culture…” and history has proven the great values of Ho Chi Minh Thought. Since 1930, the Communist Party of Vietnam founded and trained by President Ho Chi Minh has led our people to carry out a long and arduous revolutionary struggle, overcoming countless difficulties and challenges and achieving great victories: The victory of the August Revolution in 1945, smashing the colonial and feudal domination, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, bringing our nation into the era of independence and freedom; The victories of the resistance wars against invaders, culminating in the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, the great victory in the spring of 1975, completely liberating the South and unifying the country.

In the renovation process, the 6th National Congress (1986), the Communist Party of Vietnam emphasized: "To innovate thinking, our Party must firmly grasp the revolutionary and scientific nature of Marxism-Leninism, inherit the precious legacy of revolutionary ideology and theory of President Ho Chi Minh", until the 7th Congress (1991) officially stated "Promoting Ho Chi Minh's thought" and affirmed that Ho Chi Minh's thought is the result of creative application of Marxism-Leninism in the specific conditions of Vietnam, Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh's thought is the ideological foundation and guideline for the Party's actions. This marked an important step in the development of the Party's theoretical thinking.

In fact, Ho Chi Minh's thought has entered the Party's line, has become our Party's line since the Party was founded, and by the 7th Congress, subjective and objective conditions were sufficient for our Party to affirm that it takes Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh's thought as its ideological foundation.

The Platform for National Construction in the Transitional Period to Socialism adopted at the 9th National Congress (1991) affirmed that “Our Party and people are determined to build Vietnam on the socialist path on the foundation of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought”. After 20 years of construction and development with undeniable achievements of the renovation process, industrialization, modernization and international integration, the country continues to gradually transition to socialism with new, correct awareness and thinking, suitable to Vietnam's reality.

At the 11th Party Congress, the Platform for National Construction in the Transitional Period to Socialism (amended and supplemented in 2011) was adopted, drawing great lessons: "The Party must firmly grasp, creatively apply, and contribute to the development of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought" and "Ho Chi Minh Thought is a comprehensive and profound system of viewpoints on fundamental issues of the Vietnamese revolution, the result of the creative application and development of Marxism-Leninism to the specific conditions of our country, inheriting and developing the fine traditional values of the nation, absorbing the quintessence of human culture; is an extremely great and valuable ideological and theoretical heritage of our Party and people, forever illuminating the path for the revolutionary cause of our people to victory".

Looking back over 35 years of implementing the renovation process, 30 years of implementing the Platform for national construction in the transitional period to socialism, our country has achieved great achievements of historical significance, strong and comprehensive development. The scale and level of the economy have been raised, people's lives have been improved both materially and spiritually and "Our country has never had such a foundation, potential, position and international prestige as today". Ho Chi Minh's thought has been, is and will forever be a great spiritual asset of our Party and people, a flag leading the revolutionary cause of our Party and people.

Resolution 35-NQ/TW dated October 25, 2018 of the 12th Politburo clearly stated: “Firmly protecting the Party's ideological foundation is a fundamental and vital content of Party building work; is the top important task of the entire Party, the entire army, and the entire people, in which the propaganda force at all levels is the core; is the voluntary and regular work of Party committees, Party organizations, authorities, the Vietnam Fatherland Front and socio-political organizations at all levels; of each locality, agency, unit, and of each cadre and Party member”.
