Match Recap: BVB Outplay Barcelona in Dortmund, But Can't Solve Ter Stegen - Fear The Wall

The most notable match of the sixth round of the Champions League group stage will take place at the Westfalenstadion, where Borussia Dortmund (4th) will face Barcelona (3rd) on Wednesday evening.

Both teams have 12 points after their first five games and are favourites in the race for a direct qualification to the round of 16 via finishing in the top eight.

Latest Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona squad information

Dortmund are facing a defensive problem as Niklas Sule was forced off at the weekend with a right ankle injury, joining Waldemar Anton, who is still recovering from a muscle injury, on the absentee list.

Julian Brandt and Karim Adeyemi are both working towards a return to action, but Maximilian Beier will miss out after also picking up an injury in the draw with Gladbach.

Gio Reyna has been back in action for more than two weeks, but has yet to be given a full chance to play by coach Sahin, and the possibility of him playing in this match is also not high.

There are no new injury concerns for Barcelona, however, defender Andreas Christensen is still out, with Marc Bernal and Ansu Fati absent up front. However, Ronald Araujo could return after five months out.

Ferran Torres has just returned from injury and has scored in back-to-back games, but he will continue to sit on the bench, with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal set to play on either flank, supporting Robert Lewandowski, who reached 100 Champions League goals with his strike against Brest.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen's serious injury means Inaki Pena will continue to deputise in goal, ahead of Wojciech Szczesny, who returned to action after retiring from international football and joining Barcelona at the start of the season.

Latest football commentary Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona

After a comfortable 3-0 away win over Dinamo Zagreb in Matchday 5, Dortmund have failed to win their next three games. Two consecutive 1-1 draws in the Bundesliga against Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach have left Dortmund in sixth place, 12 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona, Champions League: Final Score 0-0, Marc-André ter Stegen rescues points for poor Barça - Barca Blaugranes

The draw with Bayern ended a 100% home winning streak, but it was still an impressive run under coach Nuri Sahin, with eight wins from his first nine games at the Westfalenstadion.

Dortmund have made a strong start to the Champions League and now have the chance to win their first five games of the season, something they have not done since winning the competition in 1997. Their attacking prowess has been key to their strong start, with Dortmund scoring 16 goals in their first five games, only Thomas Tuchel and incoming boss Hansi Flick have scored more in their first five Champions League games.

Dortmund have maintained their perfect home record in the competition, beating Celtic and Sturm Graz, but the match against Barcelona will be their biggest test yet.

Dortmund have never won in their four previous meetings with Barcelona, and this is the team they have faced more times in European competition without a win.

Spanish sides in general have always been a problem for Dortmund, as they lost 5-2 to Real Madrid this season, extending their run without a clean sheet to nine games against teams from the country.

While this is Dortmund's toughest of the remaining three games, Barcelona also have big challenges in January, as they host Atalanta and visit Benfica, with only one of their five games so far coming against a Pot 2 side.

Barcelona's form has also dipped a bit, after positive early signs that they could challenge for La Liga and the Champions League. A 2-2 draw with Real Betis last weekend, in which they let the lead slip twice, left Barcelona with just two wins in their last six games, giving Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid a chance to close the gap in La Liga.

Barcelona have, however, maintained their European form, with a 3-0 win over Brest in their previous game to secure their place in the last eight. However, they lost at home to Las Palmas just days later and have not played at Montjuic since, with this being their third consecutive away game.

Barcelona will not be too affected by this though, having scored 37 goals in 13 away games this season, with six of those wins coming by a margin of three or more goals. This is also a chance for Barcelona to win five consecutive Champions League games for the first time in four years, and they will be counting on their attack to continue their impressive form, having scored at least three goals in each of their previous four wins.
