Japan is moving further away from the curse.

The Japanese government's decision to remove most of its arms export bans is a historic turning point for the country, following numerous constitutional restrictions imposed since World War II.

This decision did not come as a surprise, but is the latest culmination of a process initiated by successive Japanese governments since 2014. Japan's military and defense partners have praised this new decision by the Japanese government, while China is very displeased, viewing it as a manifestation of a new form of militarism.

The government of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pursued multiple objectives simultaneously with this bold move. First and foremost, arms exports brought significant economic benefits and helped Japan expand its position in the global arms market. Removing barriers to arms exports enabled Japan to rapidly and strongly develop a modern military industry.

The result was not only the strengthening of Japan's military and defense capabilities, but also the building of a network of military and defense partnerships around the world . Ms. Takaichi's philosophy for this strategic direction was that in today's modern world, "no nation can guarantee its own peace and security; it needs the mutual assistance of its partners."

The Japanese government's approach to this policy is to use arms exports and the transfer of defense equipment to "create a security environment" most favorable to Tokyo. If the current constitutional ban on arms and defense equipment exports is a curse, then that curse is now being left even further behind Japan.
