This move comes as the Japanese government is promoting the application of AI to solve the problem of labor shortage and improve productivity - two major challenges of the national economy in recent years.

Speaking at a meeting with experts and government officials, Mr. Ishiba affirmed: "We will make Japan the friendliest country for AI research and development." The Prime Minister also directed relevant ministries and agencies to complete a basic plan for this field, expected before winter this year.

Previously, in May 2015, the Japanese Parliament passed a new law to promote AI development and address related risks. This law stipulates that the government must establish a task force to monitor policies and develop a comprehensive AI development plan.
