Many HP and Dell computers using Intel chips are banned from sale in Germany.

According to the Financial Times , the sales ban affects not only Intel CPUs but also HP and Dell computers that use them. California-based R2 Semiconductor is trying to prove in courts across multiple jurisdictions that Intel is illegally using some of its patents related to voltage regulators integrated into CPUs.

R2 Semiconductor's victory in Germany impacts both HP and Dell.

In December 2023, a German court upheld the validity of R2 Semiconductor's claims of copyright ownership over one of the controversial technologies. In the US, the company lost a legal dispute with Intel, while a UK court has yet to issue a ruling.

The German court ruling affects Intel's Ice Lake, Tiger Lake, and Alder Lake processors, as well as the Ice Lake-SP generation Xeon server processors. Sources close to Intel explain that the scale of damage from this ruling is reduced because some of the listed processors have already ceased operation, while the latest Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh CPUs are unaffected by this patent dispute.

In an official statement, Intel claimed that R2 Semiconductor was engaging in "a series of extortion attempts from companies that are genuinely innovators." In the US, Intel sought to invalidate R2 Semiconductor's patents through the courts, then shifted its attention to European courts. Overall, Intel viewed its opponent in this dispute as a petty "dummy" and a "patent fraudster"—a company that did not conduct any actual activity beyond litigation.

A German court ordered Intel to provide sales statistics for the processors affected by the dispute in Germany from March 2020 onwards, as the extent of material damage would be determined based on this information. Unsurprisingly, Intel objected to this court decision.
