Thousands evacuated

Yesterday afternoon (September 3), Typhoon Haikui made landfall in the mountainous and sparsely populated southeastern region of Taiwan, becoming the first major typhoon to directly hit the island in four years, according to Reuters. Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen urged people to avoid going outside and refrain from going to the mountains, the coast, fishing, or participating in water sports .

Taiwanese officials say more than 3,700 people have been evacuated, mostly in the south and east. Counties and cities in eastern and southern Taiwan have canceled classes and announced a day off for workers.

Large waves surged in Yilan County as Typhoon Haikui made landfall in eastern Taiwan on September 3.

Additionally, two Taiwanese airlines, UNI Air and Mandarin Airlines, canceled all flights. The Civil Aviation Administration of Taiwan said international flights were less disrupted, with only 41 flights canceled on September 3.

After sweeping across southeastern Taiwan, Typhoon Haikui is forecast to cross the Taiwan Strait into mainland China. The Guangdong Meteorological Observatory warned that Typhoon Haikui is approaching and is likely to make landfall or severely impact the province of China between September 5th and 6th, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Earlier, Typhoon Saola made landfall in Guangdong province on the morning of September 2nd, forcing 925,000 people to evacuate and affecting more than 570 hectares of crops, according to Xinhua News Agency. Typhoon Saola then struck Hong Kong on the evening of September 1st, causing hundreds of flights in the special administrative region to be canceled and toppling trees in Shenzhen, resulting in one death. Additionally, Philippine officials reported on September 1st that Typhoon Saola had caused flooding and landslides in the country, killing at least one person and forcing over 387,000 to evacuate, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The US predicts 21 hurricanes.

Meanwhile, The New York Times reported yesterday that Tropical Storm Katia formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean early on September 2nd (US time), after several other storms had formed, weakened, or merged with other storms in the ocean. US weather officials said that while the direction of Hurricane Katia is difficult to determine, it is predicted to weaken by September 3rd.

Information about the formation of Hurricane Katia emerged after Hurricane Idalia made landfall along the Big Bend area of Florida, causing widespread flooding and damage before moving north to Georgia and the states of North and South Carolina. On September 2nd, US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visited Florida to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia and the response of state, local, and federal officials to the storm, according to AP.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted on August 10th that there will be between 14 and 21 named storms this year, compared to 14 named storms last year. While overall there may not be significantly more named storms, the likelihood of more powerful storms is increasing. There is now a consensus among scientists that storms are becoming stronger due to climate change, according to The New York Times.
