Realistically recognizing the difficulties in training at vocational training institutions

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt09/11/2024

In Ho Chi Minh City, the trend of choosing to study at secondary schools is becoming more and more popular, however, training at vocationaleducation institutions in the city still faces many difficulties.

Difficulties and challenges in secondary education

At the "Symposium on "Current situation and solutions for innovation and promotion of the "3-training students" movement in the current period" held in Ho Chi Minh City on November 9, Mr. Pham Phuong Binh - Deputy Head of the Department of Continuing, University and Professional Education, Department of Education and Training of the City had many practical exchanges revolving around the issue of training secondary school students at vocational training institutions in the city.

Mr. Binh informed that although choosing to study intermediate training programs has become more popular with students in the city, the number of students participating in intermediate training is very low.

Specifically, only about 10% of students choose vocational education centers, the remaining 80% study at public or private high schools, continuing education centers, and the last 10% study abroad or study international programs.

Mr. Binh said that the problem of enrolling students in the intermediate level is very difficult. Most of the time, parents or students themselves do not choose to study at vocational training institutions from the beginning. This is often considered the last choice after failing the entrance exam to grade 10, leading to the input quality of the intermediate level not being really good.

"It is difficult for any parent to accept that their child will study at vocational training institutions from the beginning," Mr. Binh said.

According to Mr. Binh, although the city has been implementing a program of career guidance and orientation, the secondary school system will become increasingly difficult. Secondary school study time is only 2 years, and after finishing school, students still cannot sign a labor contract because they are not old enough. If students want to transfer to college, they must choose the same major as the secondary school program.

At the same time, students face difficulties because they have to study both vocational and cultural studies, while in recent years the Ministry has only organized a common high school graduation exam for all students. As a result, secondary school students will have more difficulties when participating in this exam.

Mr. Binh emphasized that career orientation is not really clear. There are students who have finished secondary and college level but still have to go back to study at continuing education centers to get a high school diploma, because a high school diploma is a certain requirement to work in some places.

The final difficulty, according to Mr. Binh, is management. Currently, vocational training facilities in the city are under the management of many different levels. This makes it difficult to unify policies to ensure the rights of students.

Good news about studying at vocational training institutions

According to the annual enrollment reports of vocational education institutions, the average annual rate of junior high school graduates enrolling in vocational education levels is about 26.19%.

Although there are still many difficulties, with the efforts of the city, departments, branches and sectors, the training situation at vocational training institutions is gradually improving. Prejudices about studying at vocational training centers are gradually being removed.

Instead of being under too much pressure for the 10th grade entrance exam, there are parents and students who have chosen to study at a continuing education center or vocational education center from the beginning.

Tran Duc Tu (grade 9 student, Tan Binh district) shared: "I will still try my best to prepare for this important exam. However, I am not under too much pressure to get into a public school. My family also does not put pressure on me, everyone fully supports me to choose to study at continuing education centers or vocational education centers."

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Education and Training affirmed that continuing education centers and vocational education centers are invested in no less than public schools, and students can feel completely secure when choosing a learning environment here.

Currently, the city has 31 continuing education centers (GDTX) and vocational education - continuing education centers (GDNN-GDTX). Of these, 5 centers have just put into use new facilities, including: GDNN-GDTX centers in districts 6, 10, 12, Phu Nhuan and Hoc Mon. The total number of classrooms increased compared to the previous school year by 90.
