Trump's election pledges

VnExpressVnExpress11/03/2024

Mr. Trump has repeatedly declared that he wants to make America great again with many policy commitments, from controlling immigration to pulling the US out of endless wars.

Former President Donald Trump is almost certain to become the Republican Party's candidate for this year's election, after winning a series of states in the primary election. Many people have even thought about the scenario of Mr. Trump returning to the White House in the next 4 years.

Throughout the campaign, Mr. Trump has been open about his goals if re-elected. Supporters say he is looking to return America to the way it was before the 2020 election, while also finishing up the unfinished business of his first term.

Immigration is one of Trump’s top concerns. He has made immigration and border control a centerpiece of his campaign, pressuring House Republicans to reject a bipartisan border control bill last month. Trump visited the border state of Texas on Feb. 29, where he has touted his hardline immigration policies.

In an op-ed published in the Des Moines Register a week before he won the Iowa primary in January, Trump said he would use the U.S. Hostile Aliens Act (ATAC) to remove gang members and drug traffickers from the country. The ATAC allows the U.S. to deport any foreign national from a country that is hostile to the U.S.

"We will shift the majority of federal law enforcement to immigration enforcement, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)," he wrote.

In a video posted on Truth Social in late February, before his visit to Texas, Mr. Trump pledged to "carry out the largest deportation campaign in American history."

After the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted in October 2023, he announced that he would suspend visas for those “sympathizing” with Hamas. “We will remove them from the university campuses, from the cities, and from the country if you feel it is necessary,” he said.

He vowed to “destroy” drug cartels by imposing a maritime blockade on them, cutting off their access to the global financial system, and deploying a Defense Department task force to deal with the cartels.

Regarding education , Donald Trump in his campaign video in September 2023 announced plans to close the Department of Education and let states take charge of work related to this field.

“We want them to take charge of the education of their children, because they will do a much better job,” he said.

The former president has pledged to put parents “in charge and have the final say” in education. In January 2023, he said he would prioritize funding for schools that allow parents to elect principals or fire teachers, use pay to incentivize quality teaching, and more.

Mr. Trump also said he would force the Department of Justice and the Department of Education to investigate violations related to racial discrimination in schools.

On health care, Mr. Trump promised in a Truth Social post in November 2023 to replace the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). His previous effort in 2017 failed after three Republican senators joined Democrats in voting against it.

“It’s not about cost, it’s about health. America will have one of the best health care systems in the world,” he said.

Mr. Trump announced in June 2023 that he would restore the executive order allowing the US government to buy drugs at the same prices as other developed countries. Some of the former president's pharmaceutical policies were reversed by Mr. Biden after taking office.

The former president has vowed to clean up the justice system by “firing radical prosecutors who are destroying America,” a threat that has raised concerns that he will use the Justice Department as a tool to attack critics and former allies.

"I will appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the most corrupt president in American history, Joe Biden, and his entire family," Mr. Trump said in June 2023.

In a campaign video last year, he said he would reinstate a 2020 executive order to remove “rogue” officials and propose a constitutional amendment to limit the term of members of Congress. Appointing conservative judges is also one of the policies that Mr. Trump aims for a second term.

In a speech in Washington in September 2023, Mr. Trump announced that he would establish a task force to review cases that he believed were "persecuted by the Biden administration." The former president noted that he wanted to "study the issue very quickly and sign pardons and commutations for them on the first day of his term."

This is seen as a move that could lead to the possibility of pardoning those who participated in the Capitol Hill riot in January 2021.

Regarding the crime problem in the US, Mr. Trump said he would not hesitate to deploy federal law enforcement to "restore public peace and safety".

Addressing what Trump called “the Democrats’ war on the police,” the former president vowed to approve record investments to recruit and retrain police officers, as well as increased protections for them. These could include increased immunity from prosecution, increased penalties for resisting arrest and deploying the National Guard if local law enforcement refuses to act.

On trade , he promised tough measures against China and "other trade abusers." The former president said that if other countries imposed tariffs on the US, Washington would immediately respond in kind.

Mr Trump has promised to lower energy prices by increasing domestic production and removing limits on US natural gas exports.

On foreign policy , Mr. Trump continued to criticize NATO members. At an event in South Carolina last month, he threatened to not defend alliance members who did not meet the agreed defense budget of at least 2% of GDP. He even said he would encourage Russia to “do whatever they want” to these members.

"NATO was destroyed until I came along. I asked everyone to pay their bills. They asked if they didn't pay, would we protect them? I said 'absolutely not,'" Mr. Trump said.

The former president previously pledged to end the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, though he did not elaborate on how he would do so. He also outlined a strategy to stop “endless wars” by removing “warmongers, fraudsters and failures from the senior ranks of government.” Trump said he would stop lobbyists and government contractors from pushing senior US military officials into wars.

Reinstating the travel ban on people from several Muslim-majority countries is one of Mr Trump’s re-election pledges, saying he wants to “keep radical Islamic terrorists out of America” after Mr Biden reverses the ban in 2021.
