The "digital farmers" in Nam Phu

From technology training courses that once seemed alien to farmers, digital transformation is gradually opening a new "door," contributing to changing production mindsets, expanding consumer markets, and creating "digital farmers" in the suburbs of Hanoi.

From vegetable fields to social media

In recent days, a large number of farmer association members in Nam Phu commune have been participating in training courses on multi-channel e-commerce applications on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, as well as guidance on installing the "Vietnamese Farmers" application.

Contrary to expectations of dry, theoretical training sessions, the classes at Nam Phu were engaging and practical. Many members confidently practiced right in the hall, directly recording videos , posting product samples on social media, and discussing common situations encountered when selling online.

Through the training course, members are guided on how to create sales accounts, post product introductions, take photos of agricultural products using smartphones, shoot short videos, livestream sales, and build engaging content on social media.

Ms. Pham Thi Hai, a farmer member from Dai Lan village, shared: “Previously, my family mainly sold vegetables to traders, so prices were often unstable. Since my children and grandchildren guided me in posting products on Facebook, we've had more orders. Participating in today's training course, I was also taught how to shoot videos and livestream, which I find very useful. At first, I was hesitant, but now I have to learn to keep up with the times.”

Mr. Pham Van Ta, owner of a clean vegetable farming model in Dai Lan village, said: “Nowadays, customers are not only interested in delicious products but also want to see the production process. Therefore, filming and posting live images from the garden helps customers trust us more. I find TikTok and Facebook not only for entertainment but also very effective advertising channels if you know how to use them.”

According to many members, the biggest advantage of online selling is that it allows products to reach more customers without relying entirely on traditional markets or intermediaries.

To date, approximately 80% of the farmers' association members in the commune use smartphones for production and business purposes; more than 500 households have initially participated in selling goods through social media and e-commerce platforms. Some local agricultural products have been more widely promoted through online community groups.

Shifting the mindset of production through digital transformation.

Beyond just online sales, digital transformation in agriculture is contributing to a shift in the production mindset of farmers in Nam Phu. From producing according to tradition, many households are now paying more attention to brand building, traceability, product image, and market demand.

Over the past period, the Farmers' Association of Nam Phu commune has actively implemented many activities to support its members in developing their economy in conjunction with digital transformation, such as coordinating the organization of technology skills training courses, guiding the promotion of OCOP products, supporting the connection of agricultural product consumption, and disseminating information on the application of information technology in agricultural production.

According to Bui Van Binh, Vice Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee of Nam Phu commune and Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Phu commune: “Digital transformation is opening up many new opportunities for farmers. In the coming time, the Farmers' Association of the commune will continue to promote propaganda and support members in applying digital technology to production and product consumption; and coordinate the organization of more training courses. At the same time, the Association will strengthen guidance for members to effectively utilize the "Vietnamese Farmers" application, gradually forming a digital farmer model in line with the spirit of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on promoting national digital transformation.”

The developments from e-commerce classes in Nam Phu today are also part of the digital transformation process that the locality is focusing on implementing after adopting the two-tiered local government model.

It is no coincidence that Nam Phu chose digital transformation as one of its key priorities after the administrative merger. With a population of nearly 14,084 households, approximately 47,000 people, a total natural area of 13.74 km², and located at the southern gateway to the capital, the locality is facing the challenge of both stabilizing its organizational structure and creating a foundation for sustainable development in the new phase.

According to Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Nam Phu commune, in agriculture, the commune continues to maintain valuable production areas such as 50.4 hectares of VietGAP-certified safe vegetables in Dai Lan, over 100 hectares of fruit trees, flowers, and ornamental plants; approximately 206 hectares of aquaculture; and many new production models generating relatively high revenue. In the craft and service areas, the production of Tranh Khuc sticky rice cakes, Van Phuc rattan weaving, and Noi Am confectionery continues to be maintained, contributing to job creation and preserving local identity.

Livestream sales classes and images of elderly farmers learning to use smartphones demonstrate that digital transformation is gradually entering daily life in Nam Phu. As a result, many local farmers are changing their mindset and practices, expanding opportunities for agricultural product sales and accessing the digital economy.
