The hard-working wives of war invalids

Mr. Le Van Chung, a 1/4 disabled veteran in Hoang Loc commune and his wife.

In a small, simple house, Mr. Le Van Chung, a 1/4 disabled veteran in Hoang Loc commune, confided in his beloved wife with gratitude for her silent sacrifice in taking care of the family for him over the past decades.

In a warm voice, mixed with a bit of humor, he said: “My wife - Ms. Le Thi Chuyen and I are from the same village. We became husband and wife in November 1981 when the unit allowed us to visit home for only 4 days of leave. During that visit, my family pressured me to ask her to marry me, so I followed my family and immediately joined the unit. Until now, I still joke and tell her that our marriage was a “loveless” marriage. However, after more than 40 years of being her wife, I am grateful for the luck of having that “loveless” marriage.”

Then he continued, "In the battle at the 479 front, I was injured and was taken to Hospital 175 for treatment, then transferred to Military Hospital 4 (under the 4th Army Corps), Ho Chi Minh City. After 3 years of treatment, the wound was stable, in 1990, I returned to reunite with my family with a disability of 2/3 of my left leg and a 2-piece fracture of my right leg, and was assessed as 1/4. For the first 2 years, the wound tormented me terribly. When I woke up, I heard my wife's story, then I knew. Every day, around 12 noon, I screamed and had uncontrollable actions that could easily endanger my life. At times like that, my wife, along with relatives and neighbors, held my head to prevent me from hitting my head, and others poured water on me. Just like that, after 30 minutes, I returned to normal, and she was the one who took care of me, bathed me, changed my clothes, and feed me. Now I no longer have that strange behavior but the wound is getting worse. My left leg has been amputated up to my buttocks so it affects my nerves and the pain is always tormenting me. When the pain recurs, I can't control myself and say things I can't control, she is patient, takes care of me, encourages me, comforts me and is the spiritual support that helps me overcome the disease."

In addition to taking care of her husband, she is also a hard-working mother who takes care of and raises her five children to adulthood. Currently, all five of their children have jobs and stable incomes, and four of them are married.

Talking about his "rear", Mr. Nguyen Chi Chien, a 2/4 disabled veteran in Trieu Loc commune, emotionally said: "Back then, my wife had to be very strong to dare to shoulder the burden with me. After nearly 44 years of being husband and wife, she has become a solid support for me. The day she stepped into her husband's house with many surprises, old and weak parents, disabled husband... life was difficult, but she did not hesitate, always trying to be a filial daughter-in-law and a good wife. In addition to managing the farm work, when she came home, she fulfilled her duties as a daughter-in-law, wife and mother."

Currently, the husband's parents are no longer alive and their daughter has her own family and is working in Ho Chi Minh City. Although she does not return home often, her children and grandchildren call every day to ask about her husband's health.

Ms. Thuy - Mr. Chien's wife said: "Due to injury and old age, in the past 2 years, his health has declined a lot, he has to go to the hospital a lot. His monthly allowance of 5.4 million VND is not enough to cover the living expenses of the two of them as well as his medical expenses. Therefore, in addition to working 3 sao of rice, I applied to cook for a private enterprise near my house with a salary of 5 million VND/month. Although the job is hard, I always encourage myself to try to overcome it to take good care of my husband, because after all, he is much luckier than his comrades who have fallen on the battlefield."

The above are just two of thousands of wives of war invalids and sick soldiers who have overcome difficulties every day and every hour to build and nurture their family life. Although each person and each situation is different, what they have in common is their diligence, hard work, sacrifice, forgiveness and extraordinary determination. Knowing that life ahead is still full of hardships, the work that mothers and sisters create today is a way of showing gratitude to their beloved husbands who have devoted their lives, blood and bones for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. It is love that has contributed to alleviating the loss and pain of war to continue writing touching stories in peacetime.
