“I never thought that my quiet contributions to the community would be honored by the city. Even less did I imagine that such a small act would give me the opportunity to visit President Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and his hometown,” shared Ms. Phan Thi Kich, a resident of Cu Chi District (Ho Chi Minh City), with deep emotion.

The delegation members visited President Ho Chi Minh's maternal hometown in Hoang Tru village, Nam Dan district, Nghe An province.

An emotional trip

One day in late November 2023, Ms. Phan Thi Kich participated in a pilgrimage organized by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh City Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front. As a native of Southern Vietnam, Ms. Kich has always loved, admired, and revered President Ho Chi Minh. However, it wasn't until she was over 57 years old that she had the opportunity to visit Hanoi , pay respects at President Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, and go to Nam Dan district (Nghe An province) to see firsthand the simple thatched house, the small bed, the courtyard, and the garden where President Ho Chi Minh was born and raised.

Amidst the rustic yet solemn scenery, seeing the preserved artifacts firsthand, and listening to the tour guide's stories, Mrs. Kich and many other delegates were deeply moved and emotional.

“Before now, I had only heard about and seen Uncle Ho through images and documentaries. Now, seeing with my own eyes the simple thatched house where he was born and raised, my heart is overflowing with emotion. Since being informed about participating in this trip to the historical site, I have been anxiously counting down the days,” said Mrs. Kich.

After visiting the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum with the delegation, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Anh Dong, 70 years old (from Hanoi, currently residing in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), choked up and wiped away a tear. She said this was her second time visiting President Ho Chi Minh. Her first visit was in 1969 when she accompanied a group of students to bid farewell to him. “This time, visiting President Ho Chi Minh, I and my colleagues in the delegation reported to him our contributions to the community and society. Everything we do follows his example,” Mrs. Anh Dong confided.

Wearing a traditional Vietnamese blouse and a checkered scarf, Mrs. Nguyen Bich Thuy (67 years old, residing in Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) reached out to find the names of the martyrs from the Southern provinces who died at Dong Loc Crossroads (Ha Tinh Province). Offering a branch of white chrysanthemums to the graves of the female martyrs who died at Dong Loc Crossroads, Mrs. Bich Thuy choked up: “I am moved and happy because this is the first time I have visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and visited these historical sites. This trip is truly meaningful to me, helping me understand more about my country and the silent but noble examples around me.”

I pledge to dedicate myself even more.

During her meaningful journey, Ms. Duong Thi Kim Dung (69 years old, residing in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) respectfully reported her accomplishments to President Ho Chi Minh. Ms. Kim Dung expressed that her small acts of kindness stemmed from learning from President Ho Chi Minh. For nearly 20 years, she has helped and supported many needy people; she has assisted and cared for many students, even taking them into her home to provide for their education. She also participates in the "Vietnamese Family with Lao and Cambodian Students" program to support students from those countries studying in Ho Chi Minh City. "In this life, I have vowed to do even more useful things to contribute to the community, to Ho Chi Minh City, and to the country. Despite my advanced age, I am determined to continue dedicating myself to the very end," Ms. Kim Dung stated.

Having participated in the trip and met exemplary individuals with noble deeds for the community, Ms. Do Thi Khanh Tram (a member of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Volunteer Group) realized that her contribution was too small. Ms. Tram and the other members of the group vowed to dedicate their youthful energy, dynamism, health, and abilities to contributing even more and spreading love even further.

For 71-year-old former Youth Volunteer Corps member Tran Thi Kim Hai (residing in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), although she has visited President Ho Chi Minh's birthplace many times, this trip was extremely meaningful. During this trip, Ms. Kim Hai met exemplary individuals who have done incredibly meaningful work for the community. "This trip has motivated and inspired me, as well as other unsung heroes, to do even more good deeds. From there, we can help improve the lives of those in need and the lives of local people," Ms. Kim Hai expressed.

In November 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, organized two trips to historical sites for outstanding individuals – "Silent but Noble Role Models" in the patriotic emulation movement of Ho Chi Minh City, from 2014 to 2022. From Ho Chi Minh City, the delegates traveled to Hanoi and the provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh. According to Pham Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, since 2014, through five events, Ho Chi Minh City has honored 618 exemplary individuals. These individuals have quietly contributed to society through acts of kindness and compassion, helping to build Ho Chi Minh City into an increasingly civilized, modern, and compassionate city with a high quality of life.
