Dream of escaping poverty from the 'Friendship House'

The person who received the Friendship House this time is Le Thi Thuy Linh, a student of the Faculty of Pedagogy ( An Giang University, residing in Ba Chuc commune, An Giang province). Having a new house, Thuy Linh could not hide her happiness. Linh's recent memories still clearly show the days when the whole family had to live in a dilapidated, cramped house. Every rainy season, water leaked everywhere, and anxiety weighed heavily on the shoulders of the mother and her three children. "I am determined to study hard so that after graduating, I can have a stable job to support my mother. Through that, in order not to disappoint the expectations of teachers and friends who supported my mother and me to have our dream house", Thuy Linh shared, her voice choked.

An Giang University delegation presented a Friendship House to student Le Thi Thuy Linh's family to help them escape poverty.

Thuy Linh is the youngest of two siblings. Her father died early and her mother worked as a hired hand to make ends meet. According to Thuy Linh, in the past, with her family's unstable income, the dream of having a new house was very far away. Many nights Linh tossed and turned, worrying about the future and her mother's growing age. Every time she saw her friends with a nice house, Linh secretly wished she could have the same. That dream also came true for the poor student's family, thanks to contributions from union members and help from friends, Thuy Linh's family was able to build a new, nice and warm house.

The 50 million VND from the Youth Union of An Giang University is an extremely valuable support, helping her family turn their dream into reality. "When I heard the news that I was considered for support to build a house, I couldn't believe my ears," Thuy Linh said with red eyes. After that, Linh called her mother and sister to tell them, and the whole family was overjoyed. That was the happiest feeling her family had ever had. The house is not only a place to live, but also a great motivation for her to try harder, creating a foundation for her family to rise out of poverty.

Motivation to escape poverty

With this shelter, Thuy Linh’s mother can work with peace of mind, no longer having to worry about storms. The joy of escaping poverty lies not only in having a beautiful house but also in the peace of mind and belief in a better life. “This house has helped my family escape from a makeshift, precarious life. Now, we can focus on working to escape poverty, no longer having to worry about housing,” Thuy Linh’s mother, Ms. Nguyen Thi Duoc, emotionally said.

Sharing about the significance of this project, Mr. Tran Trung Quoc, Secretary of the Youth Union of An Giang University, said that the 'Friendship House' program is one of the annual activities of the University Youth Union. The program aims to support and help union members and students with especially difficult circumstances. He believes that a stable home will create a solid foundation for students to study, practice and develop themselves with peace of mind.

"Seeing the bright smiles of Thuy Linh and her family, I am really happy. That is also the motivation for the School to continue implementing more meaningful programs, contributing to creating the best conditions for students, especially those who still face many obstacles in life, to rise out of poverty, enrich themselves, their families and society," Mr. Quoc shared.
