Legal battle reflects Nintendo's tough stance

Nintendo is taking new legal steps to identify individuals involved in copyright infringement, according to TechSpot . The company is seeking records from Reddit and other platforms to track down the operators of the offending network.

In a recent case, Nintendo sued two individuals who allegedly ran large centers that offered hacked systems and games. One, James Williams, who goes by the forum name Archbox, allegedly ran stores that contained pirated Nintendo games. Williams was also identified as an administrator of the subreddit r/SwitchPirates, which has more than 216,000 members on Reddit. Nintendo won the case because Williams did not contest the lawsuit.

As noted, the r/SwitchPirates subforum still has discussions about jailbreaking the Nintendo Switch or supporting piracy tools.

During the investigation, Nintendo discovered that additional individuals may have been involved in the copyright infringement network, so Nintendo filed data requests from online services such as NameCheap, GoDaddy, Tucows, Cloudflare, Github, Discord, Google, and Reddit.

Specifically, Nintendo believes Reddit may have significant information about accounts active on the r/SwitchPirates subforum, some of which are suspected to be run by Williams or his associates. Nintendo hopes this data will help identify the offending administrators and network operators.

According to the legal documents, the purpose of the subpoena is to gather information necessary for Nintendo to pursue copyright infringement claims. Nintendo insists it is only targeting individuals involved in selling modified devices and games, not all members of the subreddit.

Nintendo has taken strong action against other infringers in the past, including suing Tropic Haze, the developer of the Yuzu emulator. Nintendo claimed that Yuzu had violated copyright laws, and the lawsuit ended with Tropic Haze paying $2.4 million in damages and ceasing all operations.

The latest move shows that Nintendo is showing no signs of slowing down in its fight against piracy, and it is not only to protect the company's financial interests but also to serve as a warning to other online communities.
