Literature is a difficult subject for many students, as it requires more than just rote memorization; it demands deeper understanding and the development of writing skills. For teachers at Da Phuoc Secondary School, teaching literature to Cham ethnic minority students also presents considerable challenges. Ms. Nguyen Thi My Huong, the principal of Da Phuoc Secondary School, stated: “In the 2025-2026 school year, the school will have 170 Cham ethnic minority students across all grade levels. Innovating teaching methods and improving the quality of education in schools with ethnic minority students presents various challenges for each subject, including literature.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thi, Head of the Literature Department, stated that for Cham ethnic minority students, due to their limited Vietnamese language skills and inaccurate pronunciation, they often write words with incorrect tones. They are slow to grasp the content and their writing lacks depth. Because of these characteristics, teaching literature to Cham students is more challenging than teaching other students. With these concerns in mind, the teachers in the department are constantly striving to research and find new solutions to teach the subject effectively. Following the principle of "slow and steady wins the race" and the requirement for students to use Vietnamese during class, including when communicating with each other, the Cham ethnic minority students' Vietnamese language skills are being improved.
In addition, teachers must cultivate self-study habits in students by guiding them on some regulations for studying literature, requiring them to regularly read books to accumulate knowledge, prepare lessons, independently develop classwork, take notes, and study... Ms. Thi shared: "For our students, the first essential thing is the heart of the teachers. Because besides professional competence, teachers must always pay attention to the psychology of students to have teaching methods suitable for each individual and their level of understanding. Teachers must always be approachable, know how to listen, and share in their concerns to promptly help them overcome difficulties, stabilize their spirits and psychology, and focus on their studies."
Hasna, a student in class 9A6, expressed: “Literature is not just a subject, but a gateway to profound perspectives on humanity. The teachers' lessons help me to love what is right, to live a more meaningful life…” Sa Ri Dah, a student in class 9A5, shared: “Literature is like a miniature society within the pages of a book, helping me to learn many things, understand many moral principles, and find ways to resolve situations.”
Sy Roh, a student in class 9A3, shared: "Besides reading many books and documents and paying close attention to lectures from teachers, I regularly update myself on current events, and I am interested in cultural and social events close to my life, especially the life of the Cham people."
A distinctive feature of Vinh Hau commune after implementing the two-tiered local government model is the presence of the Cham ethnic minority, mainly concentrated in Ha Bao 2 and La Ma hamlets. Over the years, the Party, State, province, and local authorities have invested in many projects serving the people, including the Cham community, such as providing loans, building infrastructure, schools, health stations, housing support, and establishing residential clusters for ethnic minorities… and prioritizing other policies for ethnic minorities. As a result, the lives of the people have improved, and they have more opportunities to increase production and develop their family economies .
The Cham people learn Vietnamese not only to better integrate into social life, easily communicate, work, and live with the Kinh community and other ethnic groups, but also to access public services, scientific and technical knowledge, market information, economic development support policies, vocational training, and job opportunities. Mr. Huynh Ho Thanh Huy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Hau commune, said: “In recent times, in addition to opening Vietnamese language classes for the Cham people, such as literacy classes and primary education classes, the locality has also coordinated with schools with Cham students to apply various teaching methods. This helps students improve their Vietnamese language skills, enabling them to study many other subjects besides literature, contributing to improving the quality of life and development among ethnic minorities.”
