Historical themes have always held a special appeal for the stage. Currently in Ho Chi Minh City, the IDECAF Theatre, a privately-run theatre, is preparing to premiere three plays on Vietnamese historical themes: "General Le Van Duyet" (author: Pham Van Quy, director: Hoang Duan); "Tran Thu Do - Hero and Villain" (author: Le Chi Trung, director - Meritorious Artist Le Nguyen Dat); and "Empress Me Linh" (author: Vu Minh, director: Bach Long).
Experts consider this a commendable effort by impresario Huynh Anh Tuan (IDECAF Theatre) in investing heavily in Vietnamese historical drama. Mr. Huynh Anh Tuan stated that in artistic creation, any historical theatrical work must have two distinct parts: the real life of history and the fictional elements created by the artist. To achieve artistic flair, the entire production team must be vigilant: the author, director, actors, and other aspects such as art design, costumes, sound, lighting, and props. "If any of these elements are misaligned, the work will not be effective or appealing to the audience," said Mr. Huynh Anh Tuan.

Therefore, right from the scriptwriting stage, he deliberately edited the plays from a new perspective of contemporary viewers. "Historical drama is a work of art. A historical story must certainly provide viewers with valuable lessons about character and life through the beauty of the souls of historical figures. The stories presented must provoke viewers to reflect on life today," Mr. Huynh Anh Tuan emphasized.
Besides the IDECAF Drama Theatre, other theatres such as Hong Van Theatre, World Youth Theatre, Bach Long Children's Theatre, and Tran Huu Trang Theatre are also very dedicated to historical and period dramas. "Through practice, there will be mutual learning and improvement. Audiences have the right to choose, and this innovation in theatre thinking will be a welcome sign for Vietnamese historical dramas today," Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai expressed.
Historian Le Van Lan said he highly appreciates those who create stage and film scripts about Vietnamese history. According to him, through their love of Vietnamese history expressed in theatrical works, they will help the younger generation better understand the history and origins of Vietnam.
