Reenactment of the Buffalo Eating Festival to Celebrate the New Rice (Nho Lib Bong of the K'Ho people) |
In the K'Ho language, Sre means field. The K'Ho Sre people have long lived on the Di Linh plateau, settled down to cultivate wet rice fields, and joined hands to reclaim the fields of Gung Re and Bao Thuan - considered the rice granary of this land. Along with development, many beautiful features in customs and practices have faded over time. The restoration of traditional villages has revived the cultural identity values of the K'Ho Sre people. In 2022, the K'Ho Traditional Village of Di Linh district was built in Klong Trao village, Gung Re commune (on National Highway 28 to Binh Thuan ), becoming a place to preserve and maintain the tangible and intangible cultures of the K'Ho Sre people. This is also a place to organize community activities and traditional festivals for future generations to remember their roots, continue and continue the cultural heritages left by their ancestors.

Passing through the wooden gate with the words “Traditional Village of the Co Ho ethnic group”, a gathering space opens up with 5 stilt houses surrounding a large yard, the path between the spacious green grass plots. The largest wooden stilt house is located in the center, solidly built with solid round logs, polished wooden walls in the color of cockroach wings, and a bright pink tiled roof. On both sides are 4 thatched bamboo and thatch stilt houses with wooden pillars, bamboo walls, bamboo floors, palm roofs, etc. simulating the traditional long house architecture of the K'Ho people. All are surrounded by wooden fences, facing the immense rice fields that change color in all four seasons, creating the scene of a miniature village. The open landscape blends with cultural values, reminiscent of the communal space of the ancient K'Ho people.

In particular, 30 photos taken by the French described the life, activities, clothing, houses, architecture, and customs of the K'Ho people in the Di Linh plateau more than 100 years ago. The black and white photos have faded with time, the people in the photos have all passed away, but they contain great evocative power. Mr. Vu Duc Nhuan - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Di Linh district said that immediately after completion, in June 2024, the K'Ho Traditional Village held the 3rd Cultural - Sports Festival of Ethnic Minorities in Di Linh district. The project has made people excited when the K'Ho people in the whole district from Dinh Trang Thuong, Tan Nghia, Lien Dam, Dinh Lac, Dinh Trang Hoa... gathered here. After that, many cultural events and festivals were organized to create an impressive destination.

We arrived here on the day the village reenacted the New Rice Festival (Nho Lib Bong), when the last rains of the season were left, the rice had been stored, and the vast fields were still bare of stubble. The pink flower patches on the hillside signaled the warm, sunny season and the arrival of spring. In the chill of the forest, the hospitality and warmth of the people blended with the sacred space of the large and small poles, which were meticulously carved, trimmed, and carved, conveying many ideas to heaven and earth. In the corner of the yard, a young buffalo was wearing "jewelry" with unique patterns and designs, tied tightly to the base of the pole as a sacrifice. Having avoided the "savage" of killing, a strong young man holding a spear only imitated the movements of the ancients to perform the ritual. However, just an hour later, the buffalo's head would be placed at the base of the pole to offer to Yang and the gods.
The call of Yang, the earnest plea of the village elder K'Keo blended with the sound of the trumpet (Hang Lang village - Gung Re commune) resounding. Through many harvest seasons, that prayer seemed to have seeped into his blood through the words of previous generations. That word of gratitude, of prayer to heaven and earth showed that people, no matter where they are, in which land, country, or ethnicity, seem to have the same simple wishes: Pray for favorable weather, for every family to be warm and full, for everyone to be healthy, for the community to be harmonious, and for the village to be peaceful!
The village elder finished speaking, and the sound of gongs and drums resounded, the rhythmic xoang dance never stopped, the sweet aroma of grilled buffalo meat and the intoxicating, intoxicating wine filled the hearts of people. Proud of his people's traditions, Ka Hung introduced each traditional beauty and custom through each item displayed in the traditional stilt house. Then he led the visitors from afar through the warm kitchen of the K'Ho people in the long house with seeds hung on the wall to sow the next season, and foods stored in the kitchen for rainy and windy days...
Also in that proud space, the K'Keo elder told that, since ancient times, many K'Ho families have had a herd of hundreds of buffaloes grazing on the fields, so that every spring, when the fields are still bare of stubble, the K'Ho Sre people would eat buffalo together to celebrate the new rice. The K'Ho people believe that eating chicken means eating within the family, eating pig means eating within the clan, and eating buffalo means eating for the whole community. This season, they eat buffaloes from this family, next season, they eat buffaloes from another family. Any family that raises many buffaloes will choose a big and strong one to hold a ceremony to thank Yang, to celebrate a bountiful harvest so that the whole village can eat, have fun, and share the fruits of their labor.
In spring, when coming to the K'Ho Traditional Village, visitors can immerse themselves in a land imbued with humanity, walking among the season of white coffee flowers blooming on the hills, watching Ka La Lake, climbing Brah Yang Mountain, watching Bobla Waterfall... At night, the fire flickers by the jar of rice wine, eating wild vegetables, stream fish, grilled meat with the village elders, boys and girls, humming yalyao songs, tam pot tunes, and immersing themselves in xoang dances until they forget their way home.
