The price of live pigs nationwide continued its downward trend on July 24, 2025, with a significant decrease of 7,000 to 12,000 VND/kg compared to a month ago. This situation is putting great pressure on farmers as supply increases sharply while purchasing power in the market remains weak.

Pig prices drop across the country
Specifically, in the North, the price of live pigs generally fluctuated between 60,000 - 62,000 VND/kg, down about 1,000 VND/kg compared to last week. Lai Chau and Dien Bien recorded the lowest prices in the region, while Hanoi , Hung Yen, and Hai Phong maintained higher prices, around 62,000 VND/kg.
The Central Highlands region saw prices ranging from 59,000 to 63,000 VND/kg. Gia Lai is currently the locality with the lowest price in the country, reaching only 59,000 VND/kg. Provinces such as Quang Ngai, Ha Tinh, and Nghe An recorded prices around 60,000 to 61,000 VND/kg.
In the South, the price of live pigs is at 63,000 - 65,000 VND/kg. Dong Nai, An Giang , Dong Thap are trading at 63,000 VND/kg. Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho are around 64,000 VND/kg, while Tay Ninh and Ca Mau reach the highest level at 65,000 VND/kg.
Supply increased sharply, prices decreased sharply compared to last month
Although it only decreased by VND1,000-2,000/kg compared to a week ago, the most notable decrease was when compared to the end of June 2025. At that time, the price of live pigs reached VND71,000-73,000/kg in the South and VND68,000-69,000/kg in the North - the highest level in many months. However, currently, the price has decreased by VND7,000-12,000/kg depending on the region.
The main reason for this decline is the sharp increase in supply. After the period of high pork prices in the second quarter of 2025, many households and livestock enterprises have massively re-herded, leading to a situation of oversupply when market demand has not been able to recover accordingly.
African swine fever and sell-offs increase pressure
In addition to the oversupply factor, the recurrence of African swine fever in some localities such as Gia Lai, Quang Ngai, Thanh Hoa has also made farmers more worried. Although the disease has not spread widely, the fear has caused many farmers to choose to sell early, even sell off pigs that have not reached weight to avoid risks, contributing to a sudden increase in short-term supply and pushing prices down further.
Experts say that in the coming time, the price of live pigs will have difficulty recovering if market consumption does not improve. Farmers are advised to be cautious in restocking, and to closely monitor price developments and the disease situation to avoid falling into a spiral of prolonged oversupply.
