Currently, in the Bai Trang fields of Hamlet 1, Van Giang (Mai Hoa commune), people are busy harvesting pumpkins. This is the first time the locality has implemented a trial planting of organic pumpkins on a scale of 5 hectares, with 3 households participating: Mr. Dinh Van Nghia, Mr. Nguyen Dang Tinh, and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao. The model is linked with Thanh Vinh Agricultural Cooperative (Nghe An).

Pumpkins were planted by local households in mid-December 2025. After nearly 2.5 months of care, the plants are growing well and the fruits are developing uniformly. The expected yield is about 23 tons/ha. To date, households have harvested about 10 tons.

Mr. Dinh Van Nghia (Van Giang village, hamlet 1) said: “Initially, my family was a little hesitant because this is a new crop. However, with the support of the local government and the cooperative's specific technical guidance from land preparation and planting to care, we feel confident in production. Pumpkins are easy to grow, have few pests and diseases, and the investment cost is not high.”

According to Mr. Nghia, the flowering and fruiting stages of the plants require strict adherence to technical procedures to ensure yield and quality. Thanks to regular monitoring and support from technical staff, the pumpkins have developed steadily and have a high fruit setting rate.

The entire product is purchased by Thanh Vinh Cooperative at a price of 3,000 VND/kg, with an estimated average profit of nearly 20 million VND/ha.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao (Van Giang Hamlet 1) shared: “Compared to some previous crops, pumpkins are easier to care for and have a shorter growing season. We mainly focus on maintaining moisture, weeding, and monitoring the flowering time. In addition, the cooperative guarantees the purchase of the product at a stable price, so the farmers feel very secure.”

After harvesting, pumpkins are gathered and sorted by size and quality by the people of Mai Hoa commune before being transported to the purchasing unit under a contract.

With the proactive efforts of the people and cooperatives, Mai Hoa commune has actively supported the people in the process of implementing the model. Right from the beginning of the season, the local authorities coordinated surveys of land conditions, selected suitable participating households, and simultaneously promoted propaganda and mobilization to encourage people to confidently switch crops.

The initial results of the model serve as an important foundation for Mai Hoa commune to further expand production, forming a new direction in agricultural development through value chains, increasing the value of agricultural products and income for people in the area.

Through monitoring production, we have found that the local soil and climate conditions are suitable for this pumpkin variety. Although only implemented on a trial scale, the model has yielded positive results, with economic efficiency 3-4 times higher than some traditional crops. In the future, the commune will continue to cooperate with the cooperative to expand the area, creating conditions for people to participate in production, contributing to increased income and sustainable economic development.
