Female student won two SEA Games medals and chose to pursue an IT career

Determining that a sports career is not long-term, the owner of two track and field medals at the 32nd SEA Games, Bui Thi Ngan, devoted her efforts to studying a bachelor's program in Information Technology.

Returning from Cambodia on May 13, the next day, Bui Thi Ngan, 22 years old, a third-year student majoring in Information Technology, went to Hanoi Open University to complete her two-subject exam.

"Although I'm still a bit tired, I don't want to miss school," Ngan said.

Ngan won the silver medal in the 1,500m race with a time of 4 minutes 24 seconds 57, about 7 seconds behind her senior Nguyen Thi Oanh. In the 800m distance, the female student also finished second with a time of 2 minutes 8 seconds 96, behind her teammate Nguyen Thi Thu Ha (2 minutes 8 seconds 55).

The female student said she suffered an ankle injury nearly two months before leaving for the SEA Games, and thought she would have to give up. With 13 days left, she returned to light exercise because her injury had not fully recovered.

"I was devastated because I thought I wouldn't be able to participate in the SEA Games. When I'm healthy enough to compete, I just want to do my best," Ngan said.

This is the first time Ngan has been named in the track and field team for the SEA Games. Previously, the female student won the 800m championship and the 1,500m silver medal at the National Sports Festival in December 2022.

Ngan said she considers her sports career as a destiny. Since she was a junior high school student, she has participated in many school-level races and was selected to compete at the district and provincial levels.

At the beginning of grade 9, Ngan was selected to join the Nam Dinh province athletics team. Although she decided to pursue professional sports, Ngan never thought of going to a cultural supplementary school. After finishing grade 9, she was admitted to grade 10 at Ngo Quyen High School ( Nam Dinh City). Studying at a public school made it difficult for Ngan to arrange time to both practice and complete her studies.

Every day, the female student studies in the morning, practices in the afternoon, and goes to extra classes in the evening. Ngan said that there were many days when she did not have time to eat, so she had to buy food to eat quickly before going to class. During the high school graduation exam period, she often had to study at night and only went to bed when the clock struck a new day.

"There were times when I thought I couldn't keep going, but I still tried. I realized that my sports career wouldn't last long, and I still needed to study well to have another direction for the future," Ngan said.

As a result, Ngan was an excellent student in grades 10 and 12, and a good student in grade 11. She applied for admission based on her academic record and was admitted to the Information Technology major at Hanoi Open University.

At this time, Ngan was selected to train at the Da Nang National Sports Training Center. Due to the distance, Ngan registered for the distance learning program.

Since entering university, Ngan has been practicing at the training center for 2-3 hours in the morning and 2-3 hours in the afternoon. The rest of the time, she attends online E-Learning classes on the school system.

Choosing Information Technology because she loved to learn about computers since she was young, Ngan determined that she would have to study on her own. In addition to following the school's curriculum, she went online to learn more about her major. Currently, Ngan's academic results are quite good. Ngan said she is satisfied because she has never had to retake an exam.

The Open University said that the online system recorded that Ngan had never skipped a class or missed any classes. Only recently did she have to postpone an exam to practice for the 32nd SEA Games. However, her teachers then allowed Ngan to take a combined exam with the next class, so the course was completed on time.

For Ngan, arranging time at university is easier than in high school because she can access the learning system at any time, via computer or phone. Teachers at school are also ready to support students. The important thing with distance learning, according to Ngan, is to practice initiative and discipline.

The biggest challenge for Ngan is studying online but still having to take exams in person. Whenever there is an exam schedule, Ngan flies from Da Nang to Hanoi to take the test.

"I fly out on Saturday night, take the exam on Sunday, and then return to Da Nang the same day to make it to practice on Monday morning," Ngan said. The female student makes this move about six times a year.

Having trained with Ngan in the Nam Dinh province athletics team, Tran Duyen, 22 years old, was impressed by Ngan's friendliness and sociability and admired her diligence in studying.

"Ngan chose to compete in professional sports and study a rather difficult major. That is more difficult than choosing a sports school to study. You have to work really hard to be able to follow it," Duyen said. Although she thinks it is more difficult, Duyen also thinks that it is Ngan's smart choice.

With one more year to go until graduating from university, Ngan believes she can complete her Information Technology program on time. As for athletics, she will continue to train and compete as she does now.

The female student said that sports brought her many memories. For example, at the SEA Games, she was very happy to meet many athletes who had competed with her in previous Southeast Asian student tournaments. Although she only won a silver medal, Ngan still got to hear the Vietnamese National Anthem played because the winner was her teammate.

"I will devote myself to sports but I know that an athlete's career will not last long. When I can no longer compete, I will switch to the IT field," Ngan shared.
