Nguyen Bao Dung (Computer Science , University of Technology, VNU) was honored to receive the Vietnam Female Science and Technology Student Award. Dung's journey not only left an impression in her studies but also inspired many young people, especially female students, in a field that is often considered difficult for women.
Passion started in middle school
Dung shared that her love for science and technology began in middle school, thanks to her family’s encouragement and her passion for Mathematics. When she entered high school, she decided to enroll in the Mathematics major at the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, which has a high competition rate. “Passing the entrance exam was an important milestone that helped me to pursue my passion in Hanoi ,” Dung confided.
Nguyen Bao Dung (Computer Science, University of Technology, VNU Hanoi), was honored to receive the Vietnam Science and Technology Female Student Award.
Here, she was exposed to computer science problems, which sparked her desire to pursue Computer Science. Dung shared: “Although I know that this field is not easy, especially for women, I am still determined to overcome prejudice and pursue my passion.”
Initial successes in research
Since her first year of university, Dung has participated in research at the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory. Thanks to the knowledge of self-learning artificial intelligence accumulated before, she quickly determined her direction. After only six months, Dung published her first paper at the KSE 2023 International Scientific Conference. This was a stepping stone for subsequent successes such as First Prize at the Faculty-level Student Scientific Research Conference and Second Prize at the School level, all within just one year.
Dung said that time management skills are an important factor that helps her maintain a balance between studying and researching. Despite taking on many extracurricular activities such as being Secretary of the Youth Union and a member of the Executive Committee of the Information Technology Faculty Youth Union, she still maintains the leading position in terms of GPA in the industry. These achievements are not only the result of passion but also thanks to the ability to make the most of time.
Overcome difficulties and personal limits
Dung admits that the biggest challenge is not the pressure at work, but health. “Because I was so focused on research, I neglected my health, leading to migraines and many other problems,” she said. This forced Dung to change her lifestyle, spending time on exercise and meditation to reduce stress. “Health is the foundation for effective work,” Dung clearly realizes.

In addition, she emphasized that time management is a core skill. “Everyone has 24 hours in a day, the secret to success lies in how we use our time,” Dung said.
After 6 years studying Computer Science, Dung has encountered gender prejudice many times. “In the early days of entering the industry, I often felt sad because of unkind words. But looking at successful women like Huyen Chip, I have more motivation,” Dung shared.
She believes that loving and accepting yourself is the key to overcoming prejudice. To maintain her spirit, Dung believes that building good habits such as time management, exercise, and expanding her network of relationships is essential. These seemingly small habits actually become the motivation that helps her persevere in her research.
Inspiring a generation of school girls
Dung always tries to inspire other female students, especially those pursuing science and technology. She said: “Motivation is a limited resource, but persistence and good habits will help maintain motivation.” Dung believes that she herself is the strongest source of motivation.
She also actively learns from experts and friends in the industry to constantly recharge her batteries and ignite her passion for research. “Every day, I summarize and set goals for tomorrow,” she shared.
Besides her passion for scientific research, she also participates in social activities at school.
Nguyen Bao Dung is currently continuing her research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, hoping to apply technology to solve real-world problems. She hopes to contribute to the development of the IT industry and motivate the next generation of female students.
Dung advised female students who are passionate about science and technology: “Believe in yourself and don’t let prejudices hold you back. Passion is the guiding light, but perseverance and skills will lead you to success.”
Nguyen Bao Dung's story is not only a testament to her efforts and determination, but also an inspiration for many generations of female students pursuing their dreams in the STEM field.
