Clean water is slow to reach Muong Village.

At the end of 2023, a gravity-fed water supply project, funded by the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, was started. The people of Muong Village (Yen Trach commune) hoped to soon have access to clean water for daily use. However, a series of technical problems have occurred with this project.

Construction began in 2023, was completed and put into trial operation by mid-2024. According to the design, the system would ensure water supply for over 100 households in the hamlet. However, the joy was short-lived as a series of technical problems occurred.

The water intake pit at the source was buried under rocks and soil after the storm, and the pipes leading to people's homes were sometimes broken and sometimes leaking underground. Water could not flow steadily to households as expected. Mr. Vu Van Don, Secretary of the village Party branch, could not hide his sadness: "The project took quite a long time to build, and after only a few days of use, there is no water. The pipes are broken, the water is lost, and the people had high expectations, so everyone is disappointed."

Meanwhile, Mr. Ma Van Dong, the village head, shared the difficulties encountered during the temporary operation: "The system breaks down again after being repaired for a while. Once, when we turned on the water, the pipe burst, and in many places, water overflowed onto the muddy road. The villagers complained so much that we had to shut it off."

For the residents here, clean water is not only a daily necessity but also an essential condition for caring for children and maintaining hygiene in daily life. Therefore, the sincere hope expressed by Mr. Nguyen Van Dung is also the shared sentiment of many people: We always hope to have access to clean water soon.

The household's water tap was built a long time ago but remains unused because clean water has not yet arrived.

Following the incident, Yen Trach commune dispatched specialized personnel to inspect the situation, record the damage, and develop a plan for remediation. Mr. Trieu Van Son, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, stated: "The Commune People's Committee will direct a review of the entire pipeline, accurately identifying the damaged areas for comprehensive repairs, and promptly restore water supply to the people."

Although the problem-solving process remains challenging, it is noteworthy that the local authorities have begun to take more decisive action. The residents of Lang Muong hamlet hope that the technical shortcomings will be addressed so that the clean water project can truly be effective and serve the lives of the people.

Clean water, a seemingly ordinary thing in many places, is a great wish in a remote mountain village inhabited by ethnic minorities like Muong Village. Hopefully, this wish will soon become a reality through close cooperation between the government, the construction unit, and the unity of the local people.
