To accommodate the population sizes projected for 2030 and 2045, water supply scenarios have been developed with corresponding water infrastructure to ensure water security for the population.
Faced with the risks of drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion, from the beginning of 2025, Da Nang Water Supply Joint Stock Company (Dawaco) implemented solutions to ensure safe water supply, closely monitored the operation of water treatment plants, tracked salinity levels at the Cau Do water intake to operate the An Trach saltwater prevention pumping station, exploited freshwater sources from the upstream An Trach dam to transport water to the Cau Do water treatment plant; and focused on regulating flow and pressure in the water supply network.
According to the 2026 production plan, the company guarantees sufficient water supply for the city center. However, Dawaco has also proposed several solutions to enhance the sustainability of water supply, such as investing in the development of the pipeline network to increase coverage, connectivity, regulation, and support in case of pipeline failures that cause water supply interruptions.
According to Dawaco General Director Ho Minh Nam, in the context of an increasingly densely populated urban area, to ensure a stable water supply for residents and city activities, Dawaco continues to implement solutions to optimize the operation of water production plants; continue to invest in the development of the water supply system; rationally exploit raw water sources when water demand increases; and reinforce the Quang Hue dam to regulate water flow to the Yen River… ensuring safe and stable water supply operations.
Mr. Nam also suggested that all levels of government and relevant departments should have programs to monitor wastewater discharge into water sources, resource exploitation in rivers and lakes, and aquaculture practices to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent water pollution.
The hydropower reservoirs adhere to operating procedures to ensure reasonable water discharge downstream, maintaining river flow and water levels for stable operation of pumping stations. In addition, Dawaco implements the placement of sanitary protection zones around water intake areas; focuses on investing in water supply infrastructure development projects; and emphasizes water conservation awareness campaigns throughout the city.
The city's urban water supply system, managed and operated by Dawaco Company, has a total designed capacity of approximately 470,365 m3/day, of which the designed capacity of the urban water treatment plants is 475,000 m3/day.
By 2025, the capacity of the Cau Do water treatment plant will be increased from 290,000 m³ /day to 390,000 m³ /day. Of particular note is the plan to build the Song Bac reservoir. Sharing this view, Mr. Ho Minh Nam stated that the construction of the Song Bac reservoir is of great significance due to its long-term sustainability and importance to the city.
In addition to its primary function as a water source for water supply and ensuring water security with a capacity of 60-70 million m³ , guaranteeing water supply for city residents for at least two months when river water sources are disrupted, the Song Bac Reservoir can also mitigate flooding on the Song Bac and Cu De rivers, while simultaneously improving the city's ecological environment.
