After 3 years of implementing the project of raising yellowfin pompano using HDPE cages to ensure food safety in the Van Ninh sea area, the results have been very encouraging. The cage materials are modern, storm-resistant, the fish grow well, and environmental pollution is limited. These are the advantages of HDPE cages compared to traditional cages and need to be replicated.
Deploying 3 round cages for raising yellowfin pompano
After many years of working in marine fish farming, Mr. Nguyen Sang (Van Thanh commune) has experienced many successes and failures. What Mr. Sang and most aquaculture farmers here have concluded is that marine farming needs to gradually change towards modernity and sustainability. Therefore, in early 2023, he switched from raising pomfret in traditional wooden rafts to raising them in HDPE round cages. “I invested in a round HDPE cage with a circumference of 60m, a net depth of 3.5m, a cage volume of 1,000m3 with an investment capital of about 500 million VND. The government supported me with 50% of the cost of fish fry, food, medicine to prevent and treat fish diseases and a farming process to ensure food safety with a support amount of more than 760 million VND. In February, I released about 35,000 yellowfin fry. So far, the fish have grown well, and are expected to be harvested in November with a size of over 0.7kg/fish,” Mr. Sang shared.

Previously, in 2022, Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung's household in Co Co farming area, Van Thanh commune also participated in the model of raising yellowfin pomfret to ensure food safety in HDPE round cages. The form and scale of implementation are similar to Mr. Sang's household with encouraging results. Mr. Dung said that he released 35,000 fry. The yellowfin pomfret raised in HDPE cages applied food safety measures, was closely monitored by experts and provided timely guidance on fish management and care techniques, so the growth rate was good and the loss rate was low. After 9 months of farming, the fish reached a harvest size of 0.7 to 0.75 kg/fish. Mr. Dung's model harvested more than 17 tons of fish. With a selling price of 120,000 VND/kg, he earned more than 150 million VND from this batch of fish.
These are 2 of 3 aquaculture households in Van Ninh raising yellowfin pomfret in HDPE cages to ensure food safety. The remaining household is Ms. Nguyen Thi Ca in the aquaculture area of Van Thanh commune, applied in 2021. These 3 models are part of the Central agricultural extension project on building a model of raising yellowfin pomfret in HDPE cages to ensure food safety, implemented in the past 3 years (1 household per year). The project uses support funds from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , organized and implemented by the North Central Aquaculture Research Institute - Aquaculture Research Institute I, with the form of support being that people invest in round HDPE cages, the State supports 50% of the cost of seeds, feed and complies with the farming process to ensure food safety.
Need to replicate
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Thuy - Deputy Director of the North Central Coast Aquaculture Research Institute - Project Manager, after 3 years of implementation, 3 models of raising yellowfin pompano in HDPE round cages in the aquaculture area of Van Thanh commune, Van Ninh district have helped limit environmental pollution, minimize risks, increase income for fishermen and create quality, food-safe products to serve domestic and export needs. “Deploying the model in Khanh Hoa , we aim to achieve a yield of 15.7 kg of fish/m3 of cage or more; a survival rate of over 70%, a fish weight of 0.7 kg/fish, and harvested products that ensure food safety and hygiene. To achieve these goals, fish are raised according to biosafety processes, cages are placed in unpolluted areas, fish are fed with high-quality industrial feed, cages and nets are regularly cleaned and replaced, minimizing the use of drugs and chemicals in farming and disease prevention and treatment. In addition, farmed fish are also supplemented with some vitamins, minerals and digestive enzymes... The goals of the model deployed in Van Thanh and Van Ninh have all been achieved and exceeded. Along with the model implementation process, specialized agencies have transferred knowledge and techniques through on-the-ground training sessions and received much attention from people in the region and some other provinces. Many delegations of officials and fishermen have come to study tour. Therefore, we hope that the model will be widely replicated by aquaculture farmers and local authorities, helping people raise marine fish with higher productivity and output than traditional farming methods," said Master Thuy.
According to the leader of the Economic Department of Van Ninh district, there are more than 39,000 cages and 1,232 rafts of aquaculture in the district. More than 75% of these are raised in the farming area of Van Thanh commune, mainly traditional wooden rafts, the main farming objects are cobia, pompano, lobster... In recent years, many businesses and farming households have switched to HDPE cage farming, applying scientific and technical advances to shrimp and fish farming. Up to now, the whole district has 15 organizations and individuals raising fish in cages made from HDPE and FRP composite materials with a total of 140 cages. The conversion of cage materials also leads to changes in the scale of production becoming larger and larger, fishermen have also gradually applied safe and environmentally friendly marine farming processes. Farmers hope that the State will continue to implement incentive programs, supporting them in the process of converting from traditional aquaculture cages to sustainable materials and better resistance to wind and waves; At the same time, help farmers connect with large-scale purchasing sources and produce according to orders to help stabilize and sustain the shrimp and fish consumption market.
