Born in 1992, previously working for the Youth Union in the hamlet, in 2022, Mr. Pham Ga Bang came to Tien Giang to visit and learn about the model and experience of raising bamboo rats from his friend. Seeing the effectiveness, he brought the breed home to raise.
Initially, to experiment, he spent about 14 million VND to buy the offspring, each costing 1.2 million VND. After 4-6 months of raising, realizing that raising bamboo rats was effective and grew quickly, he invested more, breeding a total of nearly 200 bamboo rats.
Mr. Bang said: “Dui are very easy to raise, their main food is bamboo, sugarcane, cassava, sweet potatoes, corn, cold rice... If you raise them for sale, it only takes about 1.5 months, equivalent to 300-400 grams, priced at about 1.5 million VND/rat; if you raise them for meat, it takes about 6 months, when the dui reaches 1.2 kg, priced at 500,000 VND/kg”.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Mien, Chairman of Phong Dien Commune People's Committee (left cover), visited the bamboo rat breeding model of Mr. Pham Ga Bang to find a way to replicate it for local people.
Regarding the method and cost of making cages, his current model has 110 cells (cages) made of ceramic tiles, simple and light. Mr. Bang shared: "I bought ceramic tiles in stock so they were cheap, calculating that these 110 cells only cost about 8 million VND. After building the cells, attach a drinking water system to each cell, the rats will automatically drink water when thirsty."
According to Mr. Bang, breeding bamboo rats is quite easy, put 2 in 1 cage. Usually 1 mother bamboo rat gives birth to 3-4 baby bamboo rats. When the bamboo rat gives birth, there is no need to take care, it holds the baby itself, no intervention is needed, the food only needs to be supplemented with beans and cassava. At about 1.5 months, separate the baby bamboo rats, at that time they can be sold as breeds, or raised to sell for meat.
To invest in a barn, you only need ceramic tiles, lined to create cells, each cell holds 1 bamboo rat.
Mr. Bang's bamboo rat breeding model currently has 3 types of breeds: small bamboo rat (the heaviest weighs about 2.8 kg), medium bamboo rat (weighs about 4 kg), peach-cheeked bamboo rat (weighs about 5.5 kg); of which, peach-cheeked bamboo rat is being raised on a trial basis. Currently, Mr. Bang sells breeding rats to households in the district to expand the model; the larger the breeding rats, the higher the price. As for breeding for meat, he has a friend in Tien Giang who will come to your house to buy. These bamboo rat breeds have thick skin, sweet and fragrant meat, and can be processed into many attractive dishes.
With an initial income of 7-10 million VND/month, Mr. Bang is planning to expand his barn and replicate the model.
Mr. Nguyen Vinh Thanh, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tran Van Thoi district, said: “This is one of the new models of the people in Phong Dien commune as well as the district. Realizing that the model is effective and low-cost, mainly because the cost of the seeds is a bit high, so in the near future, it may be replicated in the district.”
Bamboo rats are also known as bamboo rats, bamboo rats, and rat rats. They are mammals and a subfamily of rodents. Bamboo rats are mainly distributed in bamboo forests in the North.
The bamboo rat has a round body, covered with thick fur. It looks quite similar to a mouse with its small, bulging, round, black eyes like longan seeds. Its ears are small and round, its four legs have sharp claws and its tail is like a mouse's tail. It also resembles a rabbit in its whiskers, nose, snout and most similar in its two pairs of upper incisors. The two pairs of upper incisors of the bamboo rat are large and strong, suitable for digging holes and gnawing food.
Adult bamboo rats usually have a body length of about 25-35cm, tail length of about 7-12cm, the tail is hairless. The weight of bamboo rats ranges from 0.7-3 kg/rat.
