These days, farmers in the rice-shrimp conversion area in Bac Lieu province are speeding up the harvest. With favorable weather conditions, low production costs, and high rice yields, people are very excited. At the same time, shrimp intercropped in rice fields is also selling well, so people are getting “double” profits.
Currently, traders come to the fields to buy giant freshwater prawns at prices ranging from 100,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, depending on size. The price of giant freshwater prawns here is 20,000 - 30,000 VND/kg higher than last season.
After harvesting the shrimp, farmers will harvest the rice crop on the shrimp land. As Tet approaches, the price of ST rice (mainly ST24, ST25) is currently at its highest level ever, ranging from 11,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, higher than the price of ST rice in the rice crop on shrimp land last year.

The model "Shrimp hugging rice" is increasingly effective and brings high economic value to farmers in Bac Lieu province.
In the 2024-2025 rice crop on shrimp land, Bac Lieu farmers planted more than 18,000 hectares of ST rice, accounting for nearly 40% of the province's shrimp-rice area.
Mr. Nguyen Van Chien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hong Dan district (Bac Lieu province) informed that in recent years, the rice-shrimp model implemented in the district has been very effective.
Because, when producing rice, combining with shrimp farming brings profits and improves the environment very well. Especially in the 2023-2024 crop year, people are extremely excited when the harvest and prices are good.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nghiep in Ninh Thanh Loi A commune, Hong Dan district (Bac Lieu province) excitedly said that since bringing shrimp to live together on the rice fields, this land has been revived.
“With more than 2 hectares of land applying the rice-shrimp model since 2020 until now, the family has always earned a profit of more than 150 - 200 million VND/year. Winning shrimp and earning a profit of several tens of millions of VND/hectare (1,000 m2) is not uncommon in this land,” Mr. Nghiep shared.
Currently, the price of ST rice (mainly ST24, ST25) on the land for raising crayfish in Bac Lieu province is purchased by traders at 11,000 - 12,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Truong Van Thien in Vinh Phu Tay commune, Phuoc Long district (Bac Lieu province) said that this year his family produced over 1 hectare of combined rice-shrimp. Thanks to favorable weather and high prices of shrimp and rice, after deducting expenses, this crop, his family earned over 80 million VND/ha.
Mr. Luu Hoang Ly, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province, said that the total production area to date exceeds 46,000 hectares.
The rice-shrimp model is considered an effective production model and needs to be replicated in the coming time. The industry's goal from 2025 to 2030 is to expand the rice-shrimp production area to more than 70,000 hectares.
To achieve this goal, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu is promoting and improving the efficiency of transferring scientific and technological applications into commercial rice production according to market requirements, effectively implementing the task of restructuring the agricultural sector towards gradual modernization, increasing added value, adapting to nature and developing sustainably.
