By raising large prawns in rice paddies, people in Bac Lieu province are selling prawns at high prices and also getting good prices for their rice.

These days, farmers in the rice-shrimp farming conversion areas of Bac Lieu province are accelerating the harvest of their crop. With favorable weather conditions, low production costs, and relatively high rice yields, the people are very enthusiastic. In addition, the shrimp intercropped in the rice fields are also fetching good prices, so the farmers are reaping a "double" benefit.

Currently, traders are buying freshwater prawns directly from the farms at prices ranging from 100,000 to 130,000 VND/kg, depending on size. The price of freshwater prawns here is 20,000-30,000 VND/kg higher than the previous season.

After harvesting the shrimp, farmers will immediately harvest the rice crop on the shrimp farming land. As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, the price of ST rice (mainly ST24 and ST25 varieties) is currently reaching its highest level ever, ranging from 11,000 to 12,000 VND/kg, even higher than the price of ST rice from the previous year's shrimp farming crop.

The "Shrimp embracing rice plant" model is becoming increasingly effective and brings high economic value to farmers in Bac Lieu province.

For the 2024-2025 rice crop on shrimp farming land, farmers in Bac Lieu province planted over 18,000 hectares of ST rice, accounting for nearly 40% of the province's shrimp-rice farming area.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Chien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hong Dan district (Bac Lieu province), in recent years, the rice-shrimp farming model implemented in the district has proven to be highly effective.

Because combining rice production with shrimp farming brings high profits and improves the environment significantly. Especially in the 2023-2024 crop season, people were extremely happy with both a bumper harvest and good prices.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nghiep, from Ninh Thanh Loi A commune, Hong Dan district (Bac Lieu province), happily stated that since introducing shrimp farming to his rice fields, the area has been revitalized.

"With over 2 hectares of land applying the rice-shrimp farming model from 2020 until now, my family has consistently earned a profit of over 150-200 million VND per year. It's not uncommon in this area to have a successful shrimp harvest earning tens of millions of VND per 1,000 m2," Mr. Nghiep shared.

Currently, the price of ST rice (mainly ST24 and ST25) grown on land used for freshwater prawn farming in Bac Lieu province is being purchased by traders at around 11,000 – 12,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Truong Van Thien, from Vinh Phu Tay commune, Phuoc Long district (Bac Lieu province), said that this year his family cultivated over 1 hectare of combined rice and shrimp farming. Thanks to favorable weather and high prices for both shrimp and rice, after deducting expenses, his family earned a profit of over 80 million VND per hectare this season.

According to Mr. Luu Hoang Ly, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province, the total production area to date has exceeded 46,000 hectares.

The rice-shrimp farming model is considered an effective production model and needs to be replicated in the future. The industry's goal for the period from 2025 to 2030 is to expand the rice-shrimp farming area to over 70,000 hectares.

To achieve this goal, the Bac Lieu Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is promoting and improving the effectiveness of transferring and applying science and technology to commercial rice production according to market demands, and is doing a good job of restructuring the agricultural sector towards gradual modernization, increasing added value, adapting to nature, and sustainable development.
