Raising freshwater prawns brings sweet rewards to ethnic minority communities.

Based on its existing potential, Phu Thien district in Gia Lai province has implemented experimental farming of many new aquatic species, most notably the giant freshwater prawn, helping to increase income for the people, especially ethnic minorities.

Phu Thien is a mountainous district in Gia Lai province with a high percentage of ethnic minorities. In recent years, the locality has actively implemented national target programs, especially the Program for Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, aiming to exploit the potential and advantages of the locality; promote innovation, boost economic development, ensure social security; reduce poverty quickly and sustainably, and gradually narrow the gap in living standards and average income between the region and the national average.

With that goal in mind, implementing Project 3: Developing sustainable agricultural and forestry production, leveraging the potential and strengths of different regions to produce goods along the value chain of the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, the district has implemented experimental farming of many new aquatic species, most notably the giant freshwater prawn, based on existing potential.
