"When my baby was a few months old, the whole family took a flight back to their hometown. I had to take off my shoes and the baby carrier and ask someone to carry my baby through security screening."
Ms. Nguyen Linh (residing in Phuoc Long ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said the above after reading the article "Proposal to remove the regulation of taking off shoes and belts during airport security checks" in Nguoi Lao Dong Online Newspaper on August 1.
According to Ms. Linh, she has 2 young children (a daughter nearly 2 years old and a son 5 years old). The family lives in Nghe An , so every time she returns to her hometown, she usually flies from Tan Son Nhat airport. When her daughter was about 3 months old, she took her 2 children back to her hometown by plane.
"I took my children to the airport, the boy was held by the hand, and the girl was carried by her mother. But when we went through the security screening gate, I had to take off the carrier and ask the security staff to help carry my daughter, sometimes I had to ask someone to accompany me. Then the children's belongings were all over the place, and I had to take off my shoes. I found this procedure annoying to many people, time-consuming, and sometimes it was easy to lose things. If it could be reduced, it would be great," Linh recalled.
Many passengers said that families with children had to take off their shoes when going through security screening. In cold areas, passengers had to take off their coats while people waiting behind them often rushed them to avoid congestion.
Passengers go through security screening procedures at Tan Son Nhat airport
Mr. Minh Thang (living in An Khanh ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that the last time he almost forgot his backpack at Tan Son Nhat airport during a family trip to Singapore 2 months ago.
"After waiting in line for about an hour to exit, the whole family continued to wait to go through the security screening of hand luggage, which took about 30 more minutes to complete the procedures. When it was time to be screened, we also took off our shoes and belts, so in total the whole family needed about 8 trays of luggage to be screened.
After completing the procedures, I forgot a backpack because of the cumbersome belongings and was worried about putting on shoes and belts while the passengers behind me were rushing me. After walking a distance, I heard someone shouting "whose backpack is it?", I was startled and turned back to get it. I have been to many countries, I think we should abolish the rule of taking off belts, especially shoes, because it is too inconvenient" - Mr. Thang admitted.
Many people agree to remove the rule of taking off shoes and belts.
According to a poll conducted by Nguoi Lao Dong Online Newspaper on August 1st on whether or not they agree to remove the requirement to take off shoes and belts when going through security checks at the airport, by this morning (August 2nd), nearly 1,200 readers agreed.
Reader with phone number 0983745xxx commented: "Because of this cumbersome procedure, when I fly, I don't wear a belt, I wear flip-flops, I take them off and put them back on quickly; I also put away all my jewelry."
Reader nguoi**@zalo.vn stated: "In the era of technology 4.0, AI..., the procedures should be reduced as much as possible while still ensuring quality. I have been to Europe, they do not require removing all the things as mentioned in the article. We should grasp their progress, reduce inconvenience for people and tourists ."
Previously, the Chairman of the Vietnam Young Entrepreneurs Association, Mr. Dang Hong Anh, proposed to eliminate security check procedures such as taking off shoes and belts at the airport. These procedures are no longer suitable for modern technological conditions, causing waste of time and costs for the whole society.
"Maintaining manual security check procedures not only reduces the passenger experience but also causes economic losses. Vietnam can completely learn and apply progressive models if there is consensus and participation from functional agencies such as airport security, customs, port authorities and related ministries," said Mr. Hong Anh.
