The 2024 ASEAN Cup championship helped coach Kim Sang-sik's position in the Vietnamese team become more stable after initial doubts. However, if purely on the technical side, it was a tournament where the Vietnamese team was only good in the final minutes, relying on the brilliance of individuals like Nguyen Xuan Son.
The fact that top opponents like Thailand or Indonesia cannot gather their strongest forces also creates a significant advantage for the Vietnamese team. In terms of playing style, Mr. Kim Sang-sik's team did not really impress, rarely creating explosive moments of emotion for fans.
However, it is also necessary to consider the reality that this is a period of generational transition for Vietnamese football. The Thuong Chau generation of Nguyen Quang Hai, Cong Phuong, Doan Van Hau… has declined in performance, paving the way for new faces, rich in energy but not yet accumulated enough level and combat experience.

Coach Kim Sang-sik's safe playing style is suitable in the context of the team's need for stability. In addition, the Korean coach is particularly skillful in motivating and encouraging his players. This helps the players play harder and more cohesively.
However, the recent defeat against Malaysia in the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup shows that to ensure its position in the region, the Vietnamese team cannot stay in the safe zone forever. Besides coach Kim Sang-sik, it may be necessary to have more versatile players as a necessary supplement.
Unlike his compatriot Park Hang-seo, coach Kim Sang-sik seems to have not yet created a truly strong personnel system. The ongoing Southeast Asian U23 Championship in Indonesia will once again be an opportunity to evaluate Kim Sang-sik's philosophy and the way he organizes, manages and operates a team.
It may decide whether Mr. Kim Sang-sik can stay with Vietnamese football longer than a 2-year contract.
