In 2023, AI is the hot topic of the world
Different from the usual topics every year such as sports , movies or travel, Google classified a completely new group when counting the keywords that Vietnamese people searched the most in the past 12 months. That is artificial intelligence (AI). This statistic shows that AI has become a new technology trend, not just a temporary fad for Vietnamese people. Generative AI models such as ChatGPT or Google Bard, can be easily accessed and used without limits with a few commands on the web browser, bringing AI closer to all Internet users than ever before.
But the ChatGPT fever that has been going on since the beginning of this year may have made many users forget that they have actually been experiencing AI technology for a long time before, right on the device they use most every day: their smartphone. Typically, the phone company launched a virtual assistant, or since 2018, Samsung has applied artificial intelligence to the camera on the Galaxy Note 9 phone line and has continuously improved AI applications over the years.
The AI breakthroughs of the past year have forced smartphone manufacturers to accelerate their AI race, according to analysts. Recently, the world's leading investment bank Morgan Stanley predicted that the global smartphone market will grow again by 4% in 2024, driven by devices that serve new user needs in the AI era.
Will there be a new race in the mobile industry?
In early October, Google launched the Pixel 8, its latest flagship phone, which integrates Google's generative AI, supporting features such as call screening, image editing, and text summarization. Apple is also developing a large language model similar to ChatGPT but has not officially announced it, according to Bloomberg.
For many years, Samsung has been preparing the premises for the development of AI. Since 2017, Samsung has organized an annual AI forum and expanded its scale every year until now. Since 2019, Samsung has risen to the top 3 private enterprises with the highest number of AI patents in the world.
In early November 2023, at the Samsung AI Forum 2023, the company officially announced Samsung Gauss - a large language model developed by the company. The model includes Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image, named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, the legendary mathematician who founded the theory of normal distribution, the core of machine learning and AI. Moreover, this naming reflects Samsung's strategic vision for models, harnessing the power of AI based on phenomena and knowledge in the world to improve the lives of consumers everywhere.
Based on this platform, dedicated to the mobile experience segment, Samsung has revealed Galaxy AI - a comprehensive mobile AI experience, which is expected to appear on the company's mobile device lines in the near future.
Galaxy AI is introduced by the company as a comprehensive and different AI experience (hybrid AI), combining AI technology integrated on Samsung devices and cloud computing platforms. It can be predicted that ordinary users in the future can rest assured when using products from Samsung Galaxy, because to experience this AI technology, there is no need to install any additional applications, helping to minimize the risk of privacy violations, disclosure of personal information or sensitive information.
Currently, Samsung is collaborating with many giants in both software and hardware such as Google and chip maker Qualcomm to ensure that its AI-integrated products will bring the best experience to users.
Samsung's strong points
In addition to its recent strong AI moves, another big advantage for Samsung is its diverse ecosystem from mobile devices to home appliances. “We’re not just bringing AI to phone users. They’re going to be able to use it on all the other Samsung products in their homes,” Samsung Electronics Vice President Patrick Chomet told the Wall Street Journal earlier this year. After phones, Samsung plans to integrate AI more deeply into home appliances, aiming for a complete AI experience across all smart home devices.
Not only is Samsung a pioneer in technology, it has also established a separate department called the AI Red Team. This group will monitor security and privacy issues that may arise in the process of collecting data and developing AI models, which is the topic that most concerns users today, according to Forbes.
The move demonstrates Samsung's commitment to always putting user data security at the highest priority. The company has also just launched Auto Blocker with a feature to automatically block the installation of applications from unauthorized sources, and announced major improvements to the Samsung Knox security engine.
With a large manufacturer with a diverse product ecosystem like Samsung making increasingly clearer moves in the field of artificial intelligence development, users can expect many new features on their phones with many benefits from AI.
The tech world is waiting for the next line of phones to integrate Galaxy AI early next year. Tech sites predict that this event of Samsung will mark the beginning of a new concept "AI phone", replacing the current smartphone.
