After terminating the contract with coach Philippe Troussier, the next thing that the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) needs to do is find a replacement. The time for this is less than 3 months. The Vietnam team will play the last 2 matches in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia next June.
With the current group stage, the Vietnamese team still has a chance to advance, but it is very unlikely. The "Golden Star Warriors" can only pass the second qualifying round if they defeat both Iraq and the Philippines, and hope that Indonesia does not win in the remaining two matches.
Coach Troussier says goodbye to the Vietnam team.
The campaign towards the 2026 World Cup with Coach Troussier failed, VFF of course needs to calculate more carefully and cautiously in the next step. A period of 2-3 months is not necessarily enough to search, screen, evaluate and sign a contract with a new person.
On the other hand, in the remaining two matches, fans do not expect too much from the Vietnamese team. The team is in crisis and does not have the right to decide in the competition for a place in the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
In such a situation, appointing an interim head coach is a possible idea. The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) once assigned coach Mai Duc Chung to lead the Vietnam team in two matches against Cambodia in 2017 after parting ways with coach Nguyen Huu Thang.
Bringing coach Park Hang Seo back as interim manager is a possible option.
If VFF considers appointing an interim coach for the Vietnam national team, Mr. Park Hang Seo could be a good choice. The Korean coach has all the characteristics suitable for a short-term job.
The first factor is familiarity, as well as capacity and suitability in working style that has been proven in his 5 successful years with Vietnamese football.
Tactically, Mr. Park's playing style can be considered outdated and difficult to develop in the long term. However, in just a few weeks to a month, the Vietnamese team does not need to calculate much about building a squad or complex playing style.
In addition, the Korean coach also left open the possibility of returning to coaching and once considered the opportunity to take over the Korean national team as an interim manager. A similar offer from Vietnam is also worth considering.
Currently, Coach Park Hang Seo is an advisor to Bac Ninh Club and manages the community football academy he founded. He has been working in Vietnam for more than a year since ending his contract with VFF.
On social media, amid the wave of protests against coach Philippe Troussier, many fans also expressed their desire for Mr. Park Hang Seo to return. There were nearly 1,000 comments under the latest post Mr. Park posted on social media yesterday (March 26), most of which were calls for him to reunite with the Vietnamese team.
