Russian President Putin said in televised comments that "we are very close to creating so-called new-generation cancer vaccines and immunomodulators."

“I hope that they will soon be used effectively as individual therapies,” he added, speaking at a forum on future technologies in Moscow.

Putin said Russia is about to create a cancer vaccine.

Mr Putin did not specify which types of cancer the proposed vaccine would target or how.

Several countries and companies are working on cancer vaccines. Last year, the UK government signed a deal with Germany-based BioNTech to launch clinical trials offering “personalized cancer treatments,” aiming to reach 10,000 patients by 2030.

Drug companies Moderna and Merck & Co are developing an experimental cancer vaccine that a mid-stage study showed halved the risk of melanoma recurrence or death after three years of treatment.

According to the World Health Organization, there are currently six licensed vaccines against human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes many cancers, including cervical cancer, as well as a vaccine against hepatitis B (HBV), which can lead to liver cancer.

During the COVID pandemic, Russia developed its own Sputnik V vaccine to fight COVID-19 and sold it to several countries.
