Trump: The Iran conflict is really nearing its end.

US President Donald Trump said the agreement between Washington and Tehran was "basically negotiated," and announced that the Strait of Hormuz would soon be reopened.

"The deal is essentially negotiated, just waiting to be finalized between the U.S., Iran, and a number of other countries," Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social on May 23rd, Eastern Time.

The US President's statement suggests a prospect of ending the months-long conflict. In the post, Trump also said he had spoken by phone with Gulf leaders, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain, to discuss negotiations with Iran.

“I also had a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the conversation went very well. The final aspects and details of the agreement are being discussed and will be announced soon,” Trump added.

Earlier, in an interview with Axios , Trump described the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran as "50-50," and said he could make a decision on May 24th about whether to resume military action in Iran. The US president said the negotiations could lead to a "good" deal, or the US would choose to "smash it."

According to U.S. and Iranian officials familiar with the matter, the versions of the memorandum under discussion are all geared towards ending the conflict in Iran, gradually reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and ending the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports. The memorandum also allows for the release of some Iranian assets frozen in overseas banks.

In addition, the memorandum will open up a period of at least 30 days for further negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding issues related to Iran's nuclear program.

Officials say the two sides are nearing a framework agreement to end the fighting, after mediators from Qatar and Pakistan were in Tehran in recent days to push for negotiations. This framework agreement will serve as a basis for the US and Iran to work towards more detailed agreements in the future.

Following meetings in Tehran on May 22-23, Pakistan's Chief of Staff Asim Munir returned to Islamabad. The Pakistani military described Munir's visit as "very productive" and said the exchanges "made a significant contribution to the reconciliation process."

Some Republican members of the U.S. Congress, who typically hold hardline views on Iran, have expressed concern over these recent developments.

Senator Lindsey Graham suggested that Iran could be seen as a "force compelling the U.S. to resolve the conflict diplomatically ." Graham argued that this would have a significant impact on the balance of power in the Middle East.

Senator Roger Wicker, Chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, argued that continuing to pursue a deal with Iran risks putting the US in a "weak image."

On the Iranian side, the Fars news agency, which is linked to the Iranian government, said that the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Tehran's control, rather than being fully reopened as Trump had stated.

"Although Iran has agreed to allow the number of ships passing through to return to pre-war levels, this does not mean that freedom of navigation can resume as before," the news agency said.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said: “Over the past week, the positions of the parties have moved closer together. We need to wait and see what happens in the next 3-4 days.”

Baghaei also emphasized that any mechanism concerning the Strait of Hormuz must be agreed upon by Iran, Oman, and the countries bordering the waterway, and stated that the US is "not involved" in the matter.

Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a stronger statement. “We will not back down in the face of national and people interests, especially when confronted by a side that has never shown sincerity and is untrustworthy,” Ghalibaf said.

Ghalibaf also warned that Iranian armed forces had reorganized during the ceasefire. If Trump “makes a mistake” and decides to restart the war, the consequences for the US would be “far more serious and bitter than in the early days of the war.”
